For the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” initiative this season, many NFL players and coaches again highlighted Christian charities and humanitarian causes on their footwear. Brock Purdy, starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, used the opportunity to raise money for Samaritan’s Purse—specifically its hurricane-recovery efforts.

Written on his cleats for San Francisco’s Dec. 8 game against Chicago were the words “Helping in Jesus’ Name.” Two days later, evangelist Franklin Graham, the president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, posted, “Thank you @brockpurdy13!”

Why QB Brock Purdy Supports Samaritan’s Purse

Brock Purdy, 24, is a Christian who often talks about the role that faith, Scripture, and prayer play in his life and career. When asked why he selected Samaritan’s Purse for his 2024 cause, Purdy said:

If I’m going to have a chance to raise money, I’d like to hopefully do it with an organization that legitimately impacts and helps people in need. And so, with Hurricane Helene that just came through, I just looked at organizations that were on the ground, hands on, helping. Samaritan’s Purse has done that and they are doing that. And so, I chose them and hopefully we can raise some money to go help out people in need with the hurricane relief.

Samaritan’s Purse has been delivering relief supplies to the East Coast and mountainous communities in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Volunteers are conducting cleanup and rebuilding homes after the devastation of Hurricane Helene, in late September, and Hurricane Milton, in early October.

The 49ers website lists each player’s cleats and cause. Next to Purdy’s shoes, Samaritan’s Purse is described as “a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” A link takes people to the organization’s website, where they can contribute to hurricane-relief efforts.

In addition, football fans could participate in an auction, bidding on players’ cleats to raise money for their chosen causes.
