Christians on social media challenged the Gaines for promoting a gay relationship. Chip Gaines responded to the backlash in several posts, including one in which he took issue with “modern American Christian culture” for being quick to judge and slow to listen.

In late August, the Gaines again received criticism for a show they had executive produced last October called “Roller Jam.” The show featured roller skating teams competing for a prize of $150,000.

The criticism centered on the fact that two-time Olympian figure skater Johnny Weir, who is gay and known for his flamboyant style, served as a judge on the show, and because one of the teams competing was an all-queer team.

Some also criticized the show because of host Jordin Sparks, who has spoken in support of gay youth and has expressed gratitude for her gay fans. Joanna Gaines was a guest judge in the season finale.

The news about Joanna Gaines’ Barbie doll was met with excitement in social media comments, although some users alluded to their disappointment with the Gaines’ recent actions. “Woke supporting woke. 😢,” said one person on Instagram.

Chip Gaines celebrated his wife’s news on X, saying, “Joanna is already in a class of her own.. but when @barbie called and asked to make her part of their doll family, I nearly burst with pride.”

“I couldn’t help but think of our daughters, our mothers before us, and the countless little girls who will see themselves in her,” he said. “You really are the best of us, @joannagaines ❤️.”

“Ah yes…it appears you are receiving all those delicious Turkish delights for betraying your Christian friends…they were so pesky…all those morals,” one user commented. “Things are much easier on the wide road, eh Chip?”

“Does hers come with a millstone?” someone else asked.

Among those celebrating the news about the new Barbie doll, however, were people asking questions such as if shiplap will be featured in the townhome and when fans can expect a Chip Gaines Ken doll.
