Megachurch Pastor John Gray has weighed in on comedian Druski’s recent skit parodying megachurch pastors, saying that it was “hilarious” and that it was mocking “church services,” not Jesus.

“There are a lot of people who are really bothered by Druski’s skit, but having done stand-up and being a comedian at heart in a lot of ways, I understood that Druski was not making fun of Jesus,” said Gray, speaking to TMZ last week. “He was making fun of church services. There is a huge difference.”

“Now, if he were to dishonor the central figure of my faith and, in my opinion, the central figure in all of human history, that would be a different conversation,” Gray noted. “But for him to parody some of the things that many of us have seen in evangelical services, I think that’s fair game.”

John Gray Encourages People Offended by Druski To ‘Be Introspective’

Drew Desbordes, known by his stage name Druski, is an actor, comedian, and influencer. A sketch he posted on Instagram Jan. 12 parodying megachurch pastors has received 4.2 million likes and over 300,000 comments as of this writing.

In it, Druski satirized the flashy antics of some megachurch pastors, as well as church leaders who urge congregants to donate large amounts of money even as the pastors are driving expensive cars and wearing expensive clothing. In the caption, Druski wrote, “Mega Church Pastors LOVE Money.”

John Gray is the lead pastor of Love Story Church in Greenville, South Carolina, a multi-campus congregation known for its emphasis on grace, restoration, and community outreach. Gray, a bestselling author, was previously a pastor at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church and for a period of time had a TV show on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Gray has been at the center of controversy at times over the years. His church has faced legal challenges over property rights, and in 2019 Gray drew criticism for living in a $1.8 million home paid for by his church.

Around that time, the pastor also faced controversy when news surfaced that he had given his wife, Aventer, a $200,000 Lamborghini. Gray said the money he used to purchase the car was not money he made from the church but from other resources, such as his books and TV show.

Gray also faced rumors of infidelity. In 2019, he admitted to an “emotional affair” but denied being physically unfaithful to his wife. In 2020, after allegations again surfaced of Gray having an affair, the pastor said there had been things posted online about him, “some of it accurate, some of it not, but all of it my responsibility.” He admitted to putting “the name of God in harm’s way.

Gray told TMZ that if people were offended by Druski’s sketch, “the best thing to do is be introspective and take a look and say, ‘Is any of this applicable to me or how I express myself in a service?’”
