Jonathan Roumie Asked God To Allow Him To Experience Some of Jesus’ Suffering

The Chosen” actor shared how, before filming Season 6, he prayed and asked the Lord to allow him to experience some of the pain Jesus endured.

“Before I started [filming] that season last year, I had asked the Lord that if there was any way that I could maybe experience a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of your suffering, I would do that as an offering,” Roumie said. “And day one he’s like, ‘Okay, there you go.’”

“There are other things even with like the scourgings—even though they were using props made of foam and and this other stuff,” he added, “we had some pretty robust soldiers, there are certain shots where they had to make contact, otherwise it just looks fake.” Said Roumie, “Even with a prop, like you know, for 10 hours you feel it—you end up with marks at the end of the day.”

Roumie explained that the pain was an “opportunity to offer it up as a sacrifice and for souls in purgatory and my own sort of remission.”

Months later, Roumie said that when he would look at the cross during a Catholic Mass service, he would just “start weeping.”

“I was like, ‘What is going on?’ And I realized this is still relating to what I just went through the last few months,” Roumie said. “And my reactions to that I recognize are tied to other trauma that I dealt with like when I was a kid and stuff.”

But, he said, “the Lord is using it.” Roumie continued, “The Lord knew exactly what I was going to need for this series and for this point in my life, in this stage of my career and playing this character effectively and in a way that maybe people haven’t experienced it before.”

“So everything that’s happened in my life has led me to be prepared for this in some way and shape, and I believe that and I think he has used it as a result,” he added.
