‘The First 10 Years Were Hell’—Lecrae and His Wife, Darragh, Share Why They Stayed Married

“I was getting out this car, and I was just going to walk somewhere,” said Darragh, saying she’s thankful now he didn’t let her. “I don’t know.” 

“I was like, ‘This is craziness,’” her husband replied as she chuckled. “So now I just remember being like, ‘Yo, man, just let this marriage end. Let it dissolve. How do we get out of this?’ And then like, you know, shout out to our mentors…they helped, but they didn’t ‘help help.’”

Darragh noted that was only because the Moores didn’t tell their mentors what was going on. Lecrae agreed, adding, “I’m just saying they helped in terms of modeling, consistency. But then when I would be like, ‘Man, I don’t know. I’m kind of in a hard place,’ it would be like, ‘Man, you know, y’all need to go through the Bible, man. Go do Bible, study that Word.’”

“So, the thing I would say is, I think it got to a place where if it wasn’t for the Bible, the Spirit of God, we wouldn’t be together for real,” said Lecrae. “Because I think it was like, okay, if somebody got to be wrong, maybe the Bible can show us what’s right.” 

“And then I remember countless times watching our wedding video,” he said, “just to be like, ‘Okay, you love this woman. Stay in the fight, Crae. Stay in the fight. You love this woman.’”

Another challenge the couple faced was never having a “honeymoon phase” after getting married. They weren’t married a year before Darragh got pregnant with their first child. And after their son David was born, they had their daughter, Amaya, 18 months later. 

“So now it’s two kids, freshly married. And we never had a honeymoon phase,” said Lecrae as Darragh agreed. “I never felt like I had a time period where I could be catered to or thought of.” 

“It was like, ‘Oh, it’s just kids now.’ You know what I mean?” he said. “So it’s like, that never really got cultivated. Like the only highlight reel I have of our being without kids is us watching ‘24.’ We watched ‘24’ in 24 hours.”

“That was fun,” said Darragh.

“We didn’t go on trips, like we went on mission trips but…we didn’t have no money,” said Lecrae. “So…I felt like it was hopeless.” 

“What were you feeling like?” he asked Darragh. “Were you just like, ‘Whatever’? How did you navigate those 10 years of just hell?” 

“I think for me sometimes, because I’m such a slow processor, there are certain things I’m not really processing it as that at the time,” she answered. “I look back on it and see.”
