According to TRR both Chan and other Moriah Peters band member, Jesi Jones, testified that Tait admitted to them both that he watched Brewer and Nicole have sex. “I had a moment of weakness. I should have done the right thing. I did not touch her, but I was in the room and I watched. Of course, I was turned on,” Chan recounted Tait saying.
Chan continued, “[Tait] voiced that because he was asking for ‘forgiveness’ and ‘repenting’—we didn’t need to raise the issue further to authorities, that the situation would be appropriately handled by management.”
Jones told TRR that she remembers Steve Campbell (tour manager and Wes Campbell’s younger brother) being “very stern and very intimidating” toward her and Chan and telling them that the situation is “being handled” and not to “meddle in this.”
Former Pulse Employee Claims Nicole Completed a Rape Test
At the tour’s next stop in Minnesota, Nicole left the tour and was taken to St. John’s Hospital, located just outside of St. Paul, Minnesota, where she completed a rape test that allegedly confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.
Matt Best, an employee for Pulse Evangelism, then accompanied Nicole to the Fargo Police Department to file a sexual assault report. Best told TRR that he felt the detective displayed an unwillingness to pursue Nicole’s allegations and recalled the officer saying, “Even if she had a rape kit, it’s not worth processing it because it’ll take three to six months.”
Nicole told TRR she never heard back from the detective.
Pulse stood behind their former employee’s accusation and praised her courage in telling her story. “Today we are standing with our former employee as she tells her story and recognize the courage it takes to do so. We are praying for all the victims and for the truth to come out,” Pulse told TRR at the time.
Matt Brewer Denied Allegations
Brewer denied the allegations. He told TRR what happened that night was consensual and was “genuinely shocked” by the content of the police report, but he pointed out that the report says that “the interaction [he] had that night was between two consenting adults.”
“At no point did she raise any concern or indicate that something inappropriate had occurred,” he continued. “If she had, I would have taken that seriously and addressed it directly.”
He told TRR, “I was not involved in any misconduct, and I respectfully ask that I not be connected to allegations that have nothing to do with me.”
Newsboys’ Management Responds to Allegations
Following the allegations against Newsboys’ management, crew member, and a former singer, the management team released the following statement in 2025:
Thank you for sharing these very serious details with us and for giving us the opportunity to respond. As we were only afforded a short window to offer comment, we have not been able to get a full understanding from those named in the text as of yet to be able to give a full response. Last Thursday, June 12, 2025, management received for the first time a police report referencing some of the individuals you have contacted us about. This was the first time Newsboys management was made aware of any alleged criminal activity related to this incident in Fargo in 2014, but based on what we read, it sure appears that the tour producer was aware of this incident and to this date, has not shared anything about it with management. We are also not aware of the band’s record label or booking agent being told either. The facts of the report we have in possession are contradictory to some of the listed statements, but missing was the statement from the bartender (as referenced in the report) or any possible video evidence (also referenced in the report). We formally requested all of the related evidence from the Fargo Police Department earlier this week, and have yet to hear a reply, but if you care to share with us what you have received, we would welcome that so we have a full account. Nevertheless, we already have launched an immediate investigation to understand what happened during these off-days more than 10 years ago, and to take necessary action against anyone who is currently affiliated with the Newsboys who proves to have been involved. Regarding the very serious allegations and statements attributed to Steve Campbell, we contacted him this morning. He says he has not heard from you and has denied the statements attributed to him. While Mr. Campbell is not a member of the band’s management, he is paid to oversee the crew, and his participation as referenced by you will need to be further investigated. This is an egregious scenario that we take very seriously, and we will address it at every level. Again, thank you.
In addition to disputing the assault allegations, the lawsuit also argues there was no attempt to conceal the incident by Newsboys’ management.
