Former Makeup Exec Finds Joy in Ministry

Cosmetics mogul-turned-Catholic priest Scott-Vincent Borba is part of a growing trend. According to a 2019 Barna survey, more than half of Christian pastors worked in another field before entering ministry.

But in the Catholic Church, men older than 50 make up only 3% of seminarians. For new priests, the average age is 33.

“A story like [Borba’s] is a great opportunity to inspire people,” said David Zachariah Flanagin, a theology professor at Saint Mary’s College of California. “And certainly, his call, I hope it’s genuinely successful, because if it is, then he will, hopefully, bring in people to know Christ.”

Ahead of his ordination, Borba described his new wardrobe as just “a few bits of clothes and a few pairs of shoes.” He lives in “a little tiny room” with “nothing in it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Borba’s heart is full. “My life has been culled down to the bare minimum,” he said. “I have never been happier in my life.”
