The pastor looked at James and told him, “No shame, no guilt. Don’t you let the devil beat you up.”

Locke also honored his ex-wife and Evan’s biological mother, Melissa.
“The worst thing about being a public figure is everything’s public. Can’t grieve in private. You can’t disagree in private. Can’t rejoice in private,” Locke said. “I want to do something tonight because I think it’s important for our family and for this house.”
He explained that nearly 10 years ago, the Locke family went through what he described as a “very public debacle.”
“But that doesn’t change who Evan’s mother is,” Locke said. “Divorce does not delegitimize a woman’s right to be a momma and she was a good one.”
“The only real discontentable words betwixt us are what the media’s made up the last 10 years,” Locke stated. “Our families are at peace. Blended families aren’t easy.”
Locke’s children then presented Melissa with a picture of her and Evan.
“We never obviously want you to forget him and his love for you. He did love you deeply. He loved you deeply. And we appreciate you. And don’t let anybody ever tell you otherwise because that’s just foolishness,” Locke said.
