Lecrae: ‘Deconstruction Isn’t a Bad Thing If It Leads to Reconstruction’

Lecrae recalled a time when he was hurt by the church. It wasn’t a particular church congregation, but the “American evangelical church—people that I’ve been doing events with [and] people that I am on tour doing church together [and] people that invited me to speak. And then in a twinkling of an eye, they turned their backs on me. Some of them will call me out or say things about me or say, like, he’s not invited here anymore because of my vocalness about the racial tensions going on in America.”

Those experiences made Lecrae question a lot of the things he knew about the church and leaders who didn’t appreciate his stance on racial issues.

Deconstruction is a “cuss word” to a lot of people, Lecrae explained. During his reconstruction, Lecrae said he tore down unnecessary things like “traditions or religiosity or rules that God never intended in the first place, and [instead] building on truth. The reconstruction is what got me through. Realizing I don’t have to embrace some of the these things—I don’t have to embrace this idea that Sunday at 8 A.M. is the only time I can connect with God. That’s not true, [but] that is how many of us do that here in the western world. But that’s not the only time you can connect with God.”

Lecrae was asked how he was able to still love Jesus and still love His people who leave harsh comments on social media. “Conceptually, I had to realize that my people hurts cannot be God hurts. I cannot transfer the hurt I’ve experienced from people onto God. God didn’t do that to me. Jesus didn’t do that to me. That was people, and people are broken. I’m one of those broken people. I’ve hurt people before. It’s recognizing and realizing that and being gracious.”

“Practically, it’s listening to the voices of people who genuinely love me,” Lecrae continued. “People who genuinely care about me. Who genuinely want to see me walk with the Lord in a healthy way.” Lecrae shared that he just walks with those people and turns “off the noise and zeroes in on the people who love me [and] on scripture and just focusing on allowing God to do that healing work in me.”
