Are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber Gay? Phil Vischer, Semler Weigh In

“I would hope that you would clarify, because for many queer people of faith, the bait-and-switch of hearing such encouraging words like yours and then finding out that it means something else can be heart-breaking—but I don’t think that’s you,” Semler said in a video response to Foreman.

Given the shortness of Vischer’s response to the question of Bob and Larry’s sexuality, some decided to hold on to their theory that the cartoon vegetables are gay.

“What I heard is ‘nope, I can’t confirm.’ So…still gay. He’s just not gonna out them,” one comment read. “All he [said] was he can’t confirm. Maybe he doesn’t even know,” said another.

Quinn Smith, who originally posed the question the Vischer, chimed in on the thread, saying, “I must admit, I was expecting a more witty response from Phil (which was why I asked the question), but considering he no longer owns the veggies, I’ll accept his non-answer.” Due to financial troubles in 2003, Vischer lost ownership of the VeggieTales characters he had created a decade earlier.

“@Dreamworks care to weigh in,” Smith went on to say. “Or should we just go straight for the big fish @comcast, can you clear this up for us? The world is waiting…”

“No one but a partner would give away your hairbrush. That would be stepping over a boundary for ‘just friends,’” one response joked, referring to the well known “Silly Songs with Larry” segment on the show.

Another remarked, “John Cooper is firing up Facebook as we speak.” The Skillet frontman recently made waves for calling Christians to “declare war” on the deconstruction movement, including those who hold to LGBTQ affirming theology. In part, Cooper said, “There is no such thing as loving Jesus but not loving His word.”

Jokes aside, the exchange is indicative of increased cultural pressure from affirming Christians on other prominent figures to declare themselves as friend or foe to the LGBTQ movement. This is particularly true for Christian public figures like Vischer, who has been labeled as “woke” by many conservative evangelicals for his views on politics and racial justice.

The question on the mind of many LGBTQ Christians is how “woke” some influential Christians are willing to be.
