‘Always Remember Him as a Flame’—Cause of Death Released for Freshman Liberty University Football Player

Tajh Boyd’s Family Grieves the Unimaginable Loss

Boyd is survived by parents, Tanzania Belfield and Dawntay Boyd. As mentioned on his LU athlete bio page, Boyd shared that he drew inspiration from his mother. “She raised me by herself with no help and she [is] the strongest person I know. She never gave up.”

His mother and family cheered him on throughout his high school football career. Boyd helped lead the team at Oscar F. Smith High School to consecutive state championships. This talented athlete was ranked as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and was selected as a second team All-Region as a high school junior. For his jersey at LU, Boyd chose 77 because they were “God’s numbers.”

As reported by WTVR, the family released a statement about Boyd’s death.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of a bright and promising 18-year-old football player that left us far too soon,” the statement said. “The community and the Belfield and Boyd families are grappling with profound grief and sorrow as they mourn the loss of a young life filled with talent, dreams and boundless potential.”

“As a family, the Belfield and Boyd families are devastated by this sudden tragedy,” the statement continued. “The pain of losing a beloved son, grandson, brother and friend is immeasurable. In this time of immense grief, the family asks for privacy, as they come to terms with their loss and find solace in the memories they shared with Tajh.”
