A video of a flash mob singing worship songs and Christmas carols inside a Kansas City, Kansas, Walmart on Sunday (Dec. 17) has gone viral.

Kelly Lohrke, who serves alongside his wife, Esther, as the lead pastor of The Cure Church, posted a video on Instagram with the caption, “This is what happens when our church goes on a trip to Walmart.”

Kelly’s video shows his wife leading about 60 congregants from the church in the singing of worship songs and Christmas carols inside the produce section at their local Walmart. Shoppers, workers, and even police officers can be seen joining in the singing as others stopped what they were doing to film it.

“After my message Sunday night, I said whoever wants to, [let’s] show up to Walmart,” Esther told KSHB News. “My main thing was go there to bring some hope to anybody.”

The idea for the flash mob came to Esther on that Sunday. She described her desire for something that was “sporadic” but with a “purpose.”

“My wife just started singing,” Kelly recalled. “Then church members started singing and then it was just bizarre. Workers started singing. And I’m watching tears come down people’s faces. I’m watching other people sing that I don’t know who they are.”

Esther shared that seeing the reactions of the people at Walmart brought her tears of joy, saying, “I paused for a second and I began to weep.”

“We all know there’s been a lot of craziness going on in the world, and you see a lot of videos in department stores and fights and arguments and hate,” Kelly said. “Jesus is the prince of peace, and we wanted to bring peace there.”

Speaking to local news FOX 4, Esther encouraged Christians to “be the light for the world wherever you’re at” this Christmas season.
