The matchup for Super Bowl LIX is now set: The reigning world champion Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on Feb. 9. The game will be a Super Bowl rematch from two years ago, which the Chiefs won 38-35. The Eagles stand in the way of the Chiefs becoming the first team in NFL history to win three straight titles.

Some players and staff from both teams are outspoken Christians. After the AFC and NFC Championship games on Sunday (Jan. 26), some of them used the spotlight to thank and praise God.

In their seventh-straight AFC Championship game, the Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 32-29. After the home victory, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes began an interview by saying, “First off, I want to give all glory to God. Without him, none of this is possible, and I truly mean that.”

Mahomes, named MVP in all three of his previous Super Bowl victories, often praises God after games. On Sunday, worship leader Sean Feucht called Mahomes “the biggest football star of my kids generation!” Sharing video of the QB glorifying God, Feucht wrote, “It’s impossible to not like this guy or his family.”

During the Chiefs’ recent bye weekend, Mahomes, 29, and his wife welcomed their third child.

While receiving another AFC trophy, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt also expressed gratitude to God. “I want to thank the Lord for this blessing and congratulate the Buffalo Bills on a tremendous season,” he said while accepting the Lamar Hunt Trophy, named after his father.

Gracie Hunt, daughter of Clark and Tavia Hunt, has been sharing Scripture verses before Chiefs games this season. Sunday’s verse was Habakkuk 3:19. After reading it, she said, “We can put complete trust in the power of the Lord to overcome. This verse reminds us that even in the face of challenging circumstances, our source of strength is the Lord.”

Hunt, 25, continued, “When we, in our human fragility, can’t, God can. When we don’t feel strong enough, Jesus is strong enough, and he’s always with us.”

In the NFC Championship game, the Eagles trounced the Washington Commanders 55-23 in Philadelphia. To begin his post-game press conference, quarterback Jalen Hurts thanked God “for giving me focus and resilience.” The 26-year-old—a two-time Pro Bowler—called the victory “a great group effort.”

When a reporter asked Hurts what he learned from losing his first Super Bowl in 2023, the QB replied, “Failure has to be used as a source of pain, to go take that next step.” He added, “There’s always learning opportunities [in] everything, and I think it’s human nature to be ignited by the shortcomings.”
