Since the NFL Draft in April, Sanders has stayed out of the public eye. “I ain’t been in front of nobody,” he said. “I haven’t had the energy.”
He was also unable to keynote at a symposium for The Foundation for Sickle Cell Research on June 8. The foundation mentioned Sanders’ “unavoidable last-minute scheduling change” when it announced that NBA star Magic Johnson would be keynoting in Sanders’ stead.
“We are grateful for his support and look forward to future opportunities to welcome him,” the foundation said of Sanders.
Deion Sanders Has Battled Health Challenges
The professional athlete turned coach has suffered debilitating blood clots in years past. In 2021, Sanders had two toes amputated due to complications with blood clots in his legs.
“I’m walking with a Limp but nevertheless I’m walking in MY PURPOSE!” he said.
Again in 2023, Sanders feared another surgery was in his future. This time, doctors explained the possibility of amputating his entire left foot. Thankfully, a full amputation was not required.
Sanders posted to Instagram at the time, saying:
As you know I’ve faced some medical challenges with my foot but I’ve never said ‘WHY ME’ – I keep moving forward, progressing…See you never know what a person may be going through while I sit in your seat of [judgment] but you can trust and believe that we are all going through something – just keep the faith and know that if He brought you to it, He will bring you through it.
Sanders added that he’s “built for this” and that he has “full trust in my medical team…and more importantly I have full trust in Jesus!”
