Matt Crocker, a worship leader and songwriter best known as a vocalist for Hillsong UNITED and Hillsong Worship, has released his first solo project, titled “interlude.”
Crocker has been a part of writing several songs that have resonated with believers and non-believers the world over, including “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail),” “This I Believe (The Creed),” and “I Surrender,” which have been streamed over 5 billion times.
Inspiration for “interlude” came amid the isolation brought on by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. “I was kind of like just wanting to exercise that muscle of music and felt like I was in the waiting like everyone else, like what’s next?” Crocker told ChurchLeaders.
“So I just chose to pick up a guitar and dive into music again,” he continued. “It was really cool, man. Like I feel like I rediscovered music all over again. I fell in love with what it was that I fell in love with as a young person. And then from there, it was just, you know, songs started coming.”
Crocker shared that this record was an opportunity for him create new things, adding, “There’s no boundaries, no rules.” Crocker’s only “non-negotiable…was it has to be seated in the Word of God.”
Crocker also wanted the record to feature music people could use to worship God, but “not Sunday morning worship you lead a congregation with that are very accessible and easy for people to sing.” Rather, he wanted to write songs that “might be a bit more complicated or a bit more interesting.”
“I feel so blessed and honored to be able to do what I do and that these songs really have reached like a lot of people,” Crocker said, sharing that he doesn’t “want to get stuck down in the like glitz and glamor” of the success.
“interlude” is now available on all streaming platforms.
