“American Idol” alum and award-winning Christian musician Colton Dixon spoke with ChurchLeaders about his new song, new fragrance, People exclusive, and the authenticity of Christian musicians.
Dixon shared that he aims to have his priority list be “God first, family second, ministry third.” He explained that to an outsider, that list might get a reaction of “duh,” but he admitted, “As you start trying to live out this calling on the ministry side, and when you look at the amount of time I’m on the road versus the time I’m home, it’s like, dang, I’m gone two-thirds of the year.”
He continued, “So these last two years, especially, I’ve just been feeling the weight of that a little bit and kind of taking that to God and going, okay, I know you’ve given us grace to do this. I might just need a little extra today.”

Romans 8:37, which says, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us,” is the verse that Dixon said inspired his new song.
“So as I’m trying to balance all of these things and trying to do them as well as I can, as good as I can,” Dixon said, “whether it’s songwriting or the live show or being a husband or being a dad or whatever, I’m doing everything I know to do to make them good.”
But, he added, “this verse is like, it’s not out of a place of striving. It’s out of a place of who I am as child of God. I get to say that I’m a son to the King of Kings and that’s the love that I carry around with me. That is what dictates the outcome of whatever it is that I’m tackling.”
“I even love that [the Apostle Paul] says ‘more than a conqueror.’ I’m like, conqueror would have been just fine. But more than that—that’s pretty special, right? It’s over the top, but that’s the God that we serve. It’s over the top.”
Dixon shared that his new song, “The Love I Have for You,” starts out “really honest and raw.” In fact, Dixon doesn’t remember the last time he was “open and conversational” in the opening of a song.
“I feel like I used to write songs for other people early in my career, but I feel like I am more and more writing songs for me now,” Dixon told ChurchLeaders. “And so this was a journal entry. This is something that I needed to be reminded of, and it’s been cool to see that there are others out there like me who need to hear it as well. So I’m pumped to see what this song does.”
