In an Instagram statement June 4, Lochte’s wife, Kayla, announced she was filing for divorce. “Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection,” she said. “I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I’ve been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing – not from fresh, open wounds.”
“I believe God is still at work – even in the breaking, even in the unknown,” said Kayla. “I choose to believe that new growth can emerge from broken ground.”
Lochte issued his own statement, saying he believed ending the marriage was the “right step.”
“This past year has brought major changes for both of us as we’ve come to the difficult decision to end our marriage,” he said. “I’m deeply grateful for the life we’ve built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.”
The following month, Lochte posted photos of himself with his girlfriend, Molly Gillihan. On Oct. 27, he posted a clip of someone, seemingly in a church context, advising people to hold off from posting on social media if they are only going to reveal their ignorance. “Pray about it don’t post about it,” said Lochte, perhaps referencing online criticism he has received for getting into a new relationship amid his ongoing divorce.
Lochte’s baptism post includes a video of him being baptized while music plays and a photo of him posing with his girlfriend and some of their respective children. Those congratulating Lochte in the comments include music artist Cory Asbury, who said, “Incredible, brother!! God is good!!,” and author and pastor Joshua Broome.
