Following Swinson’s public allegations, TMU put Caner on leave and made Dr. John Yarbrough the acting president, saying it would be conducting a third-party investigation. Caner denied that there was a cover-up but said, “We have to do better.”
On Sept. 26, TMU trustees heard the results of that investigation and afterward decided to “part ways” with Caner. Yarbrough was appointed interim president, and the university has since begun a national search for its new president. It has not publicized the results of the independent investigation.
In a statement to ChurchLeaders, Swinson’s attorney, Marcia Shein, said, “Ms. Swinson is grateful the White County District Attorney investigated the case and that the Grand Jury presented these charges. Now it is in the hands of the Justice system.”
ChurchLeaders also has reached out for comment to TMU and the creators of a Change.org petition created six months ago requesting further transparency from the university.
