In a stunning fall from grace this week, University of Michigan head football Coach Sherrone Moore was fired, arrested, and charged with three criminal counts, including one felony.
Moore, the storied program’s first Black head football coach, was fired with cause on Wednesday (Dec. 10) for what the university described as “engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
Later that day, police arrested Moore after responding to a report of an assault by a knife-wielding individual who might have been suicidal. In police-dispatch audio, the victim can be reportedly be heard saying the suspect attacked her and had been “stalking her for months.” Moore’s wife, Kelli, can reportedly be heard saying her husband was “suicidal…for losing his job today.”

Moore “had been acting strange” lately, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, causing “uneasiness” among the staff and speculation about the coach’s future. Moore conducted interviews as late as Tuesday, the day before he was fired. The Michigan Wolverines next play in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.
According to reports, the university had previously investigated claims of Moore having an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, which he denied. But after Moore reportedly fired his executive assistant, she came forward with evidence of an alleged affair. Public records indicate that the staffer had received a 55% salary bump in the previous fiscal year.
Sherrone Moore Charged With 3 Crimes
During his arraignment Friday (Dec. 12), former Michigan head football Coach Sherrone Moore was charged with three crimes: felony third-degree home invasion, misdemeanor stalking in a domestic relationship, and misdemeanor breaking and entering.
Although some outlets have named the alleged victim, court documents are keeping her identity confidential. They note only that she is “an individual with whom” Moore “has or has had a dating relationship.”

Moore was released on a $25,000 cash bond. Conditions include not contacting the alleged victim, not using substances, wearing a GPS tether, and continuing with mental health treatment.
Although the prosecutor argued that Moore was a risk to public safety, Moore’s attorney, Joseph Simon, noted that the former coach had “zero prior criminal history” and “zero contact with the criminal justice system.” An in-person probable cause conference was scheduled for Jan. 22.
When asked about Moore’s mental health, Simon refused to comment on Friday. Moore hasn’t made a public statement about his firing or arrest.
