That problem is “a small man complex. Some kind of Napoleonic—I don’t know what it is. I think it’s something that has to do with anger and ego more so than my drinking,” LaBeouf said. “But that’s where I’m at now on my journey. And I’m trying to navigate it.” Callaghan then asked what triggers LaBeouf’s anger.

LaBeouf said, “I’ll be honest with you. Big gay people are scary to me.”

“What do you mean?” Callaghan asked.

“When I’m, like, standing by myself and three gay dudes are next to me, touching my leg, I get scared,” he answered. “I’m sorry. If that’s homophobic, then I’m that.”

LaBeouf went on to say that he never had a problem with gay people and once even paid for someone’s transition. “I know what the Bible says about homosexuality,” he added.

“What does it say?” Callaghan asked.

“Nah,” LaBeouf answered.

When Callaghan noted the Bible was written a long time ago, LaBeouf seemed to suggest that Callaghan could believe whatever he wanted to but that LaBeouf is a “traditional Catholic.”

Callaghan asked if LaBeouf believes in hell. When LaBeouf said he did, the interviewer asked who was there, and LaBeouf answered that Martin Luther was. The actor did not want to pursue that line of questioning further, saying that he was not Mel Gibson.

“God bless you. I love you, too. I’m not that guy either,” LaBeouf said. “I’m not angry with my Christianity like that. I just really believe in what I believe in. I’m not trying to proselytize nobody.”

“I’m in a full-blown love affair with Jesus,” said LaBeouf. “And I believe what I believe.” The actor said that God will use the altercation and arrest to teach him something.

“I’m really a church kid, bro. People don’t know that, but I got so much support,” LaBeouf said. “That’s why I don’t feel alone.”

To the people who were concerned about him after his arrest, LaBeouf said, “I’m on a path and I’m okay.”

“I’m curious and God’s got me,” he said. “I’ve already earned the love from God. I’m straight. You know what I mean? He already did the thing.”

When LaBeouf told Callaghan that the way to find faith in God was to hit a wall, Callaghan asked what LaBeouf’s wall was.

“I put a gun in my mouth,” LaBeouf answered. “I was ready to kill myself, blow my brains out, writing letters. Dark days. For real gone. Ready to go.”

He did not take his own life because he was “p****,” because of his mother, and because a man from the program called to check in on him.

“I’m not in charge,” LaBeouf said. “You know, God’s running the s***. I just try my best and I’m not refined and I’m one of them dirty Christians.”
