Later in the conversion, Brand described his conversion experience. He said,

When I [came] to the Lord, like the Lord came to me—a recognition in an instant that instead of all these sort of diffuse and sometimes contradictory and difficult to hold ideas…that the Christian story, that God came to earth in human form, that he died, somehow taking our sin upon himself and was resurrected, was true. And I felt it not rationally or logically; I felt it in my belly.

As Brand and Morgan conversed, Brand’s Bible sat on the table in front of him. When Morgan asked Brand about it, Brand initially accused Morgan of being “cynical about human beings” and “cynical about yourself.” Morgan replied, “Not at all. I’m one of the most positive people you’ll ever meet.”

After some back and forth, Morgan said, “Can I go back to asking you a question about your Bible?” Brand consented.

Morgan asked if the Bible in front of Brand was the one that Brand carried into a recent court proceeding. Brand replied, “The very one.” Morgan then asked, “What was your thinking in taking it into court? And you were seen looking at some passages. What were the relevant passages for you?”

“Alright,” Brand said as he opened the Bible. “Thank you for asking me.” Brand began flipping through the pages, saying that he had been looking at a passage in Isaiah.

After roughly 90 seconds of searching, Brand said, “I can’t actually find the verse that I had that day. But this is good enough.” He went on to read from Isaiah 12:1-2, saying, “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense.”

“What I was looking at before was a bit where he says, ‘See, I’m doing a new thing,’ Isaiah says, ‘like springs in the desert,’” Brand said, a reference to Isaiah 43:19. “That like in the desert of your life, when your life becomes barren and difficult, that new resource with God will appear.”

“And in a situation that feels quite pressurized and condensed, and in all those preliminary appearings that I’ve attended, there’s the presence of something very beautiful,” Brand continued. “Grace, it would be called.”
