“Well, thank you for being vulnerable, dude,” Janko replied. “That’s tough.”
“Sure,” said Wahlberg. “In ‘The Chosen,’ you know, we’re watching and it’s like, I’m crying at this moment, and I’m crying at this moment, and I read this in the Bible, and now I’m watching it play out, and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I know this moment.’” The Jankos said they had had that experience as well.
“I don’t know if Matthew‘s actually autistic like that, but if he was, it made him cuter,” Janko said. “I really understood him more.”
“I love Matthew so much,” said Wahlberg. “That said, I’m watching and I’d love to talk to you about it…after [you’ve] watched the whole thing, at least until where it is now.”

“But I kept watching,” he said, “and I’m watching the apostles…and I’m like, ‘Yo, he just did this. He just did this’…now they’re arguing again and they’re doubting again and they’re questioning again.”
“He doesn’t give them the answer,” Wahlberg continued. “He’ll give them something to think about. He’ll give them a question so they can grow, right? Not just feed them the answer. And man, I wish I had that technique my whole life, right?” That way, instead of feeling like he had to have all the answers, Wahlberg could have responded to people with a question.
“So the apostles, they keep stumbling and struggling and falling, and they’re watching miracles live,” he said, “and we’re here in our comfy houses watching it, going like, ‘Yo, are you stupid? How could you question him?’” Then Wahlberg realized that he is no different than the disciples.
“I started to see it, see the whole thing in a different way, the whole series,” he said. “They’re us. They’re us. And I never knew that. I never knew that.”
When Janko commented that the disciples were “misfits,” Wahlberg said, “I knew that part. I knew they were like…you know, he qualifies the chosen, right? And I knew they were all, you know, a tax collector.”
“But it made it look real when you saw it,” Janko said.
“It made me relate in a way that I couldn’t even imagine,” Wahlberg agreed.
