“I’ve been very fortunate in my life to not have many major things happen, bad things,” he continued. “But there have been a handful of those things. And even in those times and those seasons, I found that God is faithful and he is loving and he is who he says he is.”

Powell also reflected on what he would have done differently, and he spoke about burnout and the demanding pace that Third Day maintained during the height of the band’s success.

“We got to a place where we were just working all the time and it was a big machine,” Powell said. “And I think we learned after a few years, we should have taken a little bit more time off, spent a little bit more time at home.”

“I think that’s probably the thing I would do different,” he added. “That’s something that we’ve talked about within the band, is we should have taken a little bit more time off than we did while we were a band.”

As the conversation concluded, Powell shared encouragement for Christians navigating division, deconstruction, and discouragement.

“There’s so much going on specifically within the church,” Powell said. “A lot of people falling, a lot of people deconstructing their faith.”

“And then outside of the church, just in culture and in politics, there’s so much fighting and so much bickering,” he continued. “It’s so good when we come together for a couple hours every night where all that stuff is kind of, like, gone out the window and we’re focused on the one that can bring us all together.”

Powell said many fans attending the anniversary tour are in very different spiritual places than they were when they first connected with Third Day’s music decades ago.

“I just encourage people every night that the reason you connect with these songs is because of your faith,” Powell said. “You’re drawn to God, and don’t let that be something that’s just in your past. Let that be something that’s happening today.”

Third Day performed hit after hit to more than 11,000 people on Thursday night (May 7) for two hours straight.

Fans can still catch Third Day’s 30th anniversary tour featuring Zach Williams, but there are only four dates remaining.
