With no end in sight to pandemic-related lockdowns by summer 2020, tempers began to flare. Some church leaders denied the pandemic, dismissed scientists, and rejected safety measures such as face masks and social distancing. Face coverings were soon tied to issues of freedom and politics, especially as the presidential election neared. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, a Christian, addressed the need to rely on both science and faith during the COVID-19 crisis.
