ChurchLeaders talked with “Touched by an Angel” star Roma Downey on the Teal Carpet of “The Chosen” Season 4 premiere in L.A. last week (Jan. 17).
Along with her husband, Mark Burnett (Survivor, Shark Tank, The Voice, The Apprentice), Downey has been outspoken about her faith throughout her career. The couple exemplified their faith when they created and directed “The Bible” miniseries in 2013. The series was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and received a tribute award at the 44th GMA Dove Awards.
Downey said that she loves “The Chosen” because it is all about “Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. I love Jesus and I love seeing his portrayal. I love seeing the teachings of Jesus come to life on screen for new generations.”
“This is a space I’m very familiar with,” Downey said. Notably, she played Monica in “Touched by an Angel” for nine seasons and portrayed Mary in “The Bible” television miniseries. The story of the Bible needs to be “retold” to “each generation,” Downey added. “You know, so ‘The Chosen’ is the series for this generation and we need these stories now more than ever.”
The church is getting good at telling the stories of the Bible by using the means of film, Downey said. She described “The Chosen” as Christian entertainment done with “excellence,” something she said the church historically has never really been good at doing.
“The Chosen” has “raised the bar” in Christian filmmaking, Downey said. “This [series] is a game changer.”
