Mace believes people do not ask about her spiritual walk any more because they see her faith in God. “When you have a faith in God, when you believe in Jesus Christ as our savior, people see that,” she said.

The congresswoman closed by encouraging attendees to pursue love, respect, and unity during this divided time in our nation. “We’re going to get through this,” she said, “one way or another, but take your faith and take it with you, and exude it every single day.”

Reactions to Nancy Mace’s Comments

Mace has received widespread criticism from conservatives and from ministry leaders, some of whom also called out Greg Surratt. “How thoughtful for @NancyMace to delay fornication so she could show up on time for @votetimscott‘s prayer breakfast,” said Tom Ascol, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida. “Reminds me of a line from that old song, ‘E’rybody talkin’ ’bout heaven ain’t going there.’”

Justin Peters, of Justin Peters Ministries, responded to Ascol: “This is why it is for all intents and purposes impossible for a true Christian to get to high office in this country. A true Christian would be compelled by his conscience to take the platform and call out such sin – especially at a prayer breakfast.”

Thursday night, Mace spoke to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who told her he thought her comments about her fiancé were “pretty funny.” That day, Mace responded to the backlash on Twitter, saying, “I go to church because I’m a sinner not because I’m a saint! Glad those in attendance, including @SenatorTimScott and our pastor, took this joke in stride. Pastor Greg and I will have a little extra to talk about on Sunday now.” Later, she tweeted, “My fiancé is not upset but he did suggest I go to church twice this Sunday. See y’all at the 8:30 and the 11:30!”

Justin Dean responded, “Glad you acknowledge it’s sinful. If your pastor was really a pastor he’d be counseling you on not publicly joking about living in unrepentant sin.”

Mace’s detractors drew their own critiques from people accusing them of hypocrisy. User Scott Barber responded to Ascol, “If you voted for Trump you are a complete hypocrite.”

“Hello to all the Conservatives throwing shade at Nancy Mace but staying quiet about Donald Trump being an actual rapist,” said user Sean M. Dennis. “We see you and won’t forget.”

On Thursday, Dr. Ed Stetzer, dean of Talbot School of Theology and host of “The Stetzer ChurchLeaders Podcast,” tweeted, “Hey @RepNancyMace, @GregSurratt is a good pastor and I’m glad you are connected with him and @SeacoastChurch. I prayed for you today. Thank you for your service.”

ChurchLeaders has reached out to Rep. Nancy Mace and Pastor Greg Surratt for comment and will update this article in the event of the reply.
