Christian Football Players in the NFL: More Faith-Filled Athletes

Since going undrafted out of Temple, Robbie Anderson has signed with seven NFL teams. The wide receiver, 32, also has made several name changes. Now known as Robbie Chosen, the outspoken athlete said his new moniker signaled a fresh start. “GOD 1st, Chosen Forever,” states his Instagram bio.

Last week, Chosen was cut by the San Francisco 49ers. “[God] never forsakes us,” he posted. “Keep Believing Keep Working do Right.”

On the “Sports Spectrum” podcast, Chosen described growing up in the church but embracing the Christian faith a few years ago. A player-development coach in Carolina gave Chosen a Bible and encouraged him to read Proverbs. That “shifted my perspective,” he said, teaching him about wisdom, false idols, and finding identity in Christ.

After reading Matthew, Chosen said, he wanted to deeply “reidentify myself” with a new name. The wide receiver told Sports Spectrum’s Matt Forte he also wanted to “create a new legacy for my generations” and be “very intentional and direct with my decisions.”

During Chosen’s faith journey, God is teaching him patience. “My ultimate goal is just letting God’s glory be seen through everything that I do,” he said.
