Monty Williams
Despite a 45-37 record last season with the Phoenix Suns, head coach Monty Williams was fired after losing in the playoffs. Now the former NBA player and 2022 NBA Coach of the Year has a new home leading the Detroit Pistons.
Williams, 52, is known for his strong faith, solid character, and tough love. “I tell every new player…that the essence of my coaching is to serve,” Williams said. “As a believer in Christ, that’s what I’m here for. … I tell [players] all the time, if I get on you, I’m not calling you out. I’m calling you up.”
Last season, Williams prayed on live television with an opposing coach whose father had died. In 2016, Williams faced his own tragedy when an impaired driver killed his first wife. In a eulogy that went viral, Williams spoke about the importance of forgiveness. “In my house, we have a sign that says, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’ [Joshua 24:15],” he said. “We cannot serve the Lord if we don’t have a heart of forgiveness.”
