From ‘Hopeless’ to ‘Completely Renewed’—Charlie Sheen’s Daughter Was Baptized and Openly Shares the ‘Strength of Jesus’

Lola Sheen, the daughter of actors Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards, recently “began to trust Jesus” with her life and was baptized. She describes a “supernatural” transformation from a life riddled with anxiety.

“Jesus fulfilled His promise of making me new, and completely renewed my mind,” Lola posted on Instagram.

After Hitting ‘Rock Bottom,’ Charlie Sheen’s Daughter Was Baptized and Told of How Jesus ‘Rescued’ Her

In their four years of marriage (2002-2006), actors Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards welcomed two daughters, Sami (20) and Lola (19). Lola recently experienced a significant change in her life when she accepted, as she put it, “Jesus as my Savior.”

Lola’s profession of faith and baptism comes on the heels of other celebrities who have turned to Christ. Actor and comedian Russel Brand has publicly shared his faith, struggles, and baptism as he navigates his new life. And actor Denzel Washington was baptized as he began the process of becoming an ordained minister at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lola had resigned herself to a life of struggle. Her family has had its share of substance abuse and relationship challenges. Lola was afraid that she would “never genuinely laugh again” as she sunk deeper into anxiety and depression.

“When I was in my deepest depression, there was a moment where I realized I hit rock bottom,” shared Lola. “I felt so lost and hopeless, and was just doing my best to make it to the next day.”

However, throughout 2024, Lola experienced a deep transformation. She shared, “I can’t really explain it other than it was supernatural, but Jesus met me exactly where I was, and He forever became my sun.”

After meeting her “Savior” and “best friend,” Lola “began to trust Jesus with my life.” She continued, “He chose me when no one else did, and loved me when I didn’t feel worthy of love. He gave me a light, when I couldn’t find my own, and rescued me from the darkness.”

She remembers the anxiety and sorrow of her former life. “Jesus saved me from battling severe anxiety, and gave me a peace that makes no sense,” Lola said. “I now find myself laughing again, in places I only had cried.”

Lola said of the transformation, “Jesus fulfilled His promise of making me new and completely renewed my mind.”

“Jesus is the only reason why I’m here today and made my life worth living,” Lola said.

Lola explained why she chose to get baptized at the beginning of 2025: “Because I made it through this year only by the strength of Jesus, and I am so happy to go into this next year, after publicly declaring Jesus as my Savior. I am forever saved by His Grace, through faith.”

Vance Defends Trump Policy Allowing ICE Raids of Churches, Schools Amid Backlash from US Conference of Catholic Bishops

Vice President J.D. Vance addressed several concerns regarding the early actions of the Trump administration during an interview with CBS News on Sunday (Jan. 26). During the interview, “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan asked Vance several pointed questions about immigration policy.

The interview came roughly a week after Trump was inaugurated. On his first day in office, Trump signed numerous executive orders, including one that suspended the United States Refugee Admission Program (USRAP) and another that sought to bring an end to birthright citizenship.

Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship has since been halted by a federal judge, who described the executive order as “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The Trump administration has also enacted a policy whereby schools and houses of worship will no longer be protected from raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

US Conference of Catholic Bishops Urge Trump To ‘Reconsider’ Immigration Polices

In response to these policies and executive orders, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), released a statement urging the president to reconsider his course of action.

“Many of the issues President Trump addresses in his recent Executive Orders, along with what may be issued in the coming days, are matters on which the Church has much to offer,” Broglio said. “Some provisions contained in the Executive Orders, such as those focused on the treatment of immigrants and refugees, foreign aid…are deeply troubling and will have negative consequences, many of which will harm the most vulnerable among us.”

“I wish to reiterate that the Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party, and neither is the bishops’ conference. No matter who occupies the White House or holds the majority on Capitol Hill, the Church’s teachings remain unchanged,” Broglio continued. “It is our hope that the leadership of our Country will reconsider those actions which disregard not only the human dignity of a few, but of us all.”

JD Vance, a Catholic, on US Conference of Catholic Bishops: ‘I Hope…They’ll Do Better’

During Vice President Vance’s appearance on “Face the Nation,” Margaret Brennan brought up Broglio’s statement, asking Vance, who is a Roman Catholic, whether he supports allowing ICE to raid church services or schools.

“Let me address this,” Vance said. “Of course, if you have a person who is convicted of a violent crime, whether they’re an illegal immigrant or a non-illegal immigrant, you have to go and get that person to protect the public safety. That’s not unique to immigration.”

Brian Welch Talks to ChurchLeaders About Rejoining Korn, His Faith, and Misconceptions

Brian Welch, guitarist for the Grammy Award-winning multiplatinum nu metal band Korn, became popular among Christians after he committed his life to Jesus in 2005. In an exclusive interview with ChurchLeaders, Welch discussed his life and faith, as well as his journey back to the band he walked away from after becoming a Christian.

Known to Korn fans as “Head”—a nickname given to him by his bandmates due to the size of his head—Welch came to faith after a long battle with addiction and mental struggles.

Plagued by depression throughout most of his life, Welch has shared that he accepted Christ after his real estate broker invited him to church. Immediately following the service, he went home, placed his young daughter in front of the television, and did a line of crystal meth.

After snorting the drugs, Welch said he cried out, “Jesus if you’re real like that pastor said, then you got to take these drugs from me. Come into my life. Come into my heart.”

Welch continued, “I just got quiet. I said, ‘Search me right now. Search my heart. And I stayed silent and I said, ‘You know I want to quit. You know I want to be a good dad for this kid.'” The mother of Welch’s daughter was out of the picture because of drugs, and reaching out to God, Welch said, “And she’s going to lose me if I don’t quit. Amen.”

“I felt so much fatherly love from heaven, and it was like, ‘I don’t condemn you. I love you. I love you,’” Welch said. “Instantly, that love from God came into me. It was so powerful that the next day I threw away all my drugs and I quit Korn.”

“I was like, I’m quitting Korn and I am going to raise my kid because I got the love from God coming out of me and then it came out of me to my kid,” he added. “It changed me. My heart was changed like that…God used [my daughter] to save me, to save her life later on.”

Brian Welch Shares What God Is Currently Teaching Him

In 2013, Welch returned to Korn after an eight-year absence. Fresh off Korn’s latest tour, during which the band celebrated its 30th anniversary, Welch expressed that his time in the band has been “surreal.”

RELATED: Korn Guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch Shares Picture of Israel Baptism To Celebrate ‘Spiritual Birthday’; John Cooper Says ‘Brian’s Testimony Is an Absolute Miracle!’

“I did 11 years, and then I left for eight, and then came back,” he explained. “And so it’s just really bizarre to hear that number. And it doesn’t feel like we’re as old as we are, you know, doesn’t feel 30 years have passed. Every show [on this tour] sold out, besides three. I’m incredibly grateful that we could still do it.”

Although some have criticized Welch for rejoining Korn, Welch said he is exactly where God has called him to be. “I’ve got this odd calling where a lot of Christians don’t understand it and write me off,” he said.

Nigerian Pastor William F. Kumuyi Prayed for Trump—Now Has Some Advice for Him

William F. Kumuyi

(RNS) — The pastor of one of the world’s largest churches had some advice for President Donald Trump as he begins his second term in office: Don’t settle for just trying to make America great or think of America’s interests only. Instead, work on making the world a better place for everyone, not just Americans.

“We need the help of countries in the world, the United States, for example, to not only make America great, but to make the rest of the world peaceful,” said William F. Kumuyi, founder of Deeper Christian Life Ministry based in Lagos, Nigeria, a congregation that claims to draw 120,000 worshippers a week.

Kumuyi, a former university professor turned Pentecostal preacher whose evangelistic crusades have drawn millions, was in Washington, D.C., recently for Christian events surrounding the inauguration of Donald Trump. Those events included a praise and prayer convocation organized by the Family Research Council and Well Versed, a conservative group led by the Rev. James Garlow, an avid Trump supporter who organized prayer calls as part of the Stop the Steal movement following the 2020 presidential election.

In a video interview with Religion News Service, Kumuyi said he’d come to the inauguration from Nigeria to connect with other Christian leaders who believe their faith should make an impact in the public square and to talk with them about evangelism around the world.

Kumuyi had hoped to view the inauguration in person but ended up watching it on television after the ceremony was moved indoors. He said the peaceful transfer of power showed the importance of democracy, both in the United States and around the world. “The people have spoken and the votes are cast, and we now say that this is the president, even those who might not have voted for him would accept that,” he said. “I think other countries need to learn something about that.”

He also said it was important for President Trump to be not just a president for those who voted for him but also to work for the welfare of all Americans — and to remember that his administration will build on the work of the presidents who came before him.

During the interview Kumuyi spoke repeatedly about the need for Christians to have a positive impact on the world around them, calling them to be the light of the world and salt of the earth — two metaphors from the New Testament’s Sermon on the Mount. Rather than retreat from the outside world, or focus on the success of just one country, he said Christians in the U.S. should engage with the rest of the world.

If all the light is on one place, he said, using the biblical metaphor, what good is it?

“The Lord doesn’t want us to isolate ourselves,” Kumuyi said. “I would say that the New Testament encourages us, and not only encourages but instructs us that we should be part of the world in which we live and see how to make change for the better. Being isolated is not the solution.”

During a prayer convocation before the inauguration, the 83-year-old pastor asked God to bless Trump and to bring revival to America’s churches, which have been in decline for decades.

“Revive your church, restore your church and purge your church, that there will be the holiness and the righteousness you expect for your church, and the church will have a meaningful ministry in the government as well as in the nation,” he prayed. “Confirm it. Oh Lord, answer the prayer of your people for this nation, America.”

During his inaugural address, Trump mentioned the failed attempt on his life this past summer, saying he believed his life had been spared for a reason. Hearing that was encouraging, said Kuyumi.

5 Ways Churches Can Cultivate Strong, Lasting Marriages

In today’s culture, the sanctity of marriage faces increasing challenges. From rising divorce rates to the pressures of modern life, couples often find themselves struggling to maintain healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Pastors and church leaders have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to support couples, fostering strong, Christ-centered marriages that can withstand the tests of time.

Marriage is not just a private relationship; it’s a reflection of God’s covenant with His people. A thriving marriage strengthens families, communities, and the church as a whole.

But how can churches proactively support couples and create an environment that helps marriages flourish? Here are five best practices to implement at your church.

1. Prioritize Premarital Counseling

One of the most effective ways to foster long-term marital success is by laying a strong foundation before couples say, “I do.” Premarital counseling shouldn’t be optional—it should be a requirement for couples getting married in the church. These sessions provide a critical opportunity to address key topics like communication, conflict resolution, intimacy, finances, and biblical principles for marriage.

By investing in premarital counseling, churches help couples set realistic expectations and navigate the inevitable challenges they will face. Using resources such as “Preparing for Marriage” or similar biblically-based programs can ensure couples are equipped with the tools they need to build a lasting relationship.

2. Offer Ongoing Marriage Enrichment Programs

Marriage enrichment should not stop at the altar. Just as individuals need continuous spiritual growth, marriages require ongoing nourishment. Churches can provide this by hosting regular retreats, workshops, and seminars focused on communication, intimacy, forgiveness, and unity.

These programs should be framed as essential parts of the Christian walk, encouraging couples to invest in their relationships consistently—not just when problems arise. This proactive approach helps to prevent marital breakdowns before they begin.

Through intentional work, I’ve seen the transformative impact that marriage enrichment programs can have on couples and families. By equipping churches with tools and resources, Communio empowers congregations to build a culture that supports thriving marriages and reduces divorce rates in our local communities.

3. Create Mentorship Opportunities and Support Groups

Mentorship is a powerful tool for strengthening marriages. By connecting younger couples with older, more experienced couples, churches can foster relationships that provide encouragement, wisdom, and accountability. These mentorship relationships offer couples a safe space to discuss challenges, receive prayer, and gain practical insights from those who have weathered the ups and downs of marriage.

In addition to mentorship, small support groups allow married couples to share their experiences, build community, and realize they are not alone in their struggles. These groups can focus on specific topics such as finances, parenting, or managing conflict—ensuring that couples receive tailored support for their unique needs.

4. Regularly Preach and Teach the Biblical View of Marriage

Regular teaching on the biblical model of marriage reinforces its importance within the church. Sermons, Bible studies, and discipleship programs should consistently highlight the sanctity of marriage, addressing topics like love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and commitment. Key scripture passages such as Ephesians 5:22-33 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 provide a strong foundation for these teachings.

A Deep Dive into Benny Hinn Ministries: Mission and Controversies

Benny Hinn Ministries

Benny Hinn Ministries has long been a prominent name in the world of televangelism, captivating millions worldwide with its message of healing, faith, and salvation. Led by the charismatic preacher Benny Hinn, the ministry’s expansive reach and enduring influence have been both celebrated and critiqued. In this article, we will explore the mission of Benny Hinn Ministries and the controversies that have shaped public perception of the organization.

The Mission of Benny Hinn Ministries

Benny Hinn Ministries has stated its mission as spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. Through television broadcasts, crusades, and online platforms, the ministry emphasizes salvation, healing, and the transformative power of faith. Central to the ministry’s message is the belief in miracles and divine healing, which Hinn attributes to the power of the Holy Spirit.

One of the most recognizable aspects of Benny Hinn Ministries is the “Miracle Crusades,” large-scale events held in arenas across the globe. These gatherings often draw tens of thousands of attendees seeking spiritual renewal and physical healing. The ministry’s television program, This Is Your Day, extends its reach even further, airing in over 200 countries and translated into multiple languages. By leveraging modern media, the ministry has created a global network of followers united by their faith.

The ministry also engages in various charitable endeavors. Over the years, it has supported humanitarian aid projects, including food distribution, medical assistance, and disaster relief in impoverished areas. These efforts underscore the ministry’s broader goal of demonstrating God’s love through practical acts of kindness.

Theological Foundations

Benny Hinn’s teachings align closely with the prosperity gospel and Pentecostal traditions, emphasizing the power of faith in achieving spiritual and material blessings. His preaching often highlights the importance of tithing, prayer, and unwavering belief in God’s promises. Critics and supporters alike note his reliance on the concept of “seed faith,” encouraging believers to plant financial seeds in expectation of divine blessings.

The ministry’s focus on miraculous healing has been particularly polarizing. Hinn frequently conducts live healing sessions during his events, claiming that the Holy Spirit enables him to heal ailments ranging from chronic pain to terminal illnesses. For many followers, these moments serve as tangible evidence of God’s power, solidifying their faith and commitment to the ministry.

Controversies Surrounding Benny Hinn Ministries

While Benny Hinn Ministries has inspired countless individuals, it has also faced significant scrutiny. The controversies surrounding the ministry stem from questions about financial practices, theological claims, and the authenticity of healing miracles.

Actor Chris Pratt, returning home for the first time since wildfires broke out around Los Angeles, shared an update Thursday (Jan. 23) about the disaster’s impacts. In a video posted to social media, the outspoken Christian thanked people for their prayers and support. Despite the heavy losses and devastation, Pratt said, “We’re resilient, and we trust in God and consider it a blessing.”

After the Palisades Fire began on Jan. 7, Pratt shared photos of the flames and requested prayers. That blaze, which is now contained, burned more than 23,000 acres.

Firefighters continue to battle flames throughout Southern California, which has experienced drought conditions and high winds. So far, this month’s fires have killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than 15,000 homes and businesses.

Chris Pratt’s House Was Spared ‘By the Grace of God’

In his latest post, Pratt said he was heading to check out his house. “Miraculously it’s still standing,” he said. “By the grace of God, we have four walls and a roof.”

Although that was a “silver lining” of the disaster, said Pratt, “At the same time, so many people’s houses were burned around us, and the community’s gone.” Losses include his 12-year-old son’s school, the homes of “dozens of our friends,” and the house of Pratt’s ex-wife, actor Anna Faris.

Pratt, 45, married Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, and the couple have three young children.

Amid the “wild” devastation, Pratt said, “It’s been inspiring to see how our communities come together.” He told viewers he would provide more updates “now that we’re kind of getting back into life.”

‘We’ll Get Through This Together,’ Says Chris Pratt

In the caption of Pratt’s latest post, he wrote, “It’s been a tough few weeks, but we’re resilient. Praying for LA and all those impacted, we’ll get through this together. God bless.”

In the comments, people shared thoughts about the disaster and Pratt’s references to God. “Love how you’re so vocal for the Lord,” someone wrote.

Another person commented, “I believe that’s the exact reason your house is standing, because of God! Because you are not afraid to speak the name of Jesus! So many other celebrities are not for Christ, and I think that’s why so much devastation.”

Other people questioned God’s role in the wildfires—and even his existence. Some took issue with Pratt’s phrasing “by the grace of God.” One wrote, “You mean by the grace of firefighters working around the clock…”

Hall of Fame baseball player Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, have been accused of failing to protect a minor from sexual abuse and are being sued for “negligent supervision” and “premises liability.”

Rivera was a relief pitcher for the New York Yankees from 1995-2013. Rivera spent his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees, where he won five World Series Championships with the team. He was named World Series MVP in 1999.

Rivera played 13 All-Star games, holds the record for most saves in the MLB, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame during the his first year of eligibility in 2019. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest closing pitchers of all time.

Clara serves as the senior pastor of Refuge of Hope Church in New Rochelle, New York. According to the church’s website, “Refuge of Hope began in 2009 in the home of Mariano and Clara Rivera. A small group of individuals would meet for a time of prayer and sharing on a regular basis.”

After the group quickly grew, the church evolved into what it is today.

Lawsuit Claims Riveras’ Failed To Protect and Report Sexual Abuse of a Minor

In a lawsuit that was filed against Refuge of Hope and the Riveras’ former estate on Jan. 16, Brook View Rye LLC claims that a minor, identified as Jane Doe, who attended the church was sexually abused at a summer camp in 2018.

Doe’s mother claims that at Clara’s encouragement, Doe attended a summer internship that was being held at Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida. Upon Doe’s arrival, she was housed with “a much older camper who also attended Refuge of Hope,” identified in the suit as “MG.” The suit claims that during Doe’s stay, she was “repeatedly sexually abused” in both the camp’s dormitory and shower.

Doe’s mother expressed concern for her daughter’s safety to Clara, and the lawsuit says that Clara assured Doe’s mother that “she would investigate [her] report and respond accordingly.”

“Ms. Rivera and her husband, Refuge of Hope employee/volunteer/agent Mariano Rivera, then traveled from New York to Florida to see Doe at the Ignite Life Summer Internship,” the suit reads. “During that trip, the Riveras, in their capacity as agents for [Doe and her mother], learned or should have learned information that Doe was being sexually abused by MG.”

1,000 Liberty University Students Attend March for Life

On Friday, Jan. 24, the annual March for Life took place in Washington D.C., where thousands of pro-lifers gathered to stand for the lives of the pre-born.

March for Life participants gathered for a time of worship, encouragement, and demonstration that started at the National Mall and ended at the steps of the United States Supreme Court.

The first March for Life took place on January 22, 1974, in an attempt to persuade the United States Supreme Court to reverse the Roe v. Wade decision, which established the right to abortion access.

RELATED: Pastor Greg Laurie Gives the Gospel to Thousands Attending March for Life

Nearly 50 years later, on June 24, 2023, the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision by a 6-3 vote. The decision now allows individual states to determine abortion laws. As of this writing, abortion is illegal in 12 states.

Some of this year’s March for Life speakers include Vice President J.D. Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantisBethany Hamilton, Lila Rose, U.S. Senator John Thune, Christian recording artist Unspoken, and more.

During an interview, Liberty University‘s Ryan Helfenbein told ChurchLeaders that Liberty would bus in 1,000 students to participate in the march on Friday.

Helfenbein, who is the vice president of communications and public engagement for Liberty and the executive director of Liberty’s Standing for Freedom Center, shared that this will be the fifth year he has led Liberty University students at the march.

“We’re just raising awareness,” Helfenbein said. “We really just do believe that this is the touch point for the next generation—that they’ve got to be involved, and if you can get students to march for life, you’re much more likely to get them to give for the cause of life, and to vote for the cause of life.”

Helfenbein compared the experience to going on a mission trip for the first time and explained how it drives home the importance of the issue.

“It’s not a political talking point,” Helfenbein said. “This is a matter of biblical faithfulness [and the] stewardship of the gospel that we’ve been entrusted with. This is what James calls pure and undefiled religion—caring for the orphan and the widow in their distress. That’s what caring for the life of the unborn is really about.”

10 Kinds of Pastors You Should Have MAJOR Concerns About

pastors

Pastors, it’s not a secret the church has been in decline for a number of years and for a variety of reasons. Everyone has their opinions. But here are 10 reasons I’m concerned about pastors like these. Abuse, apostasy and irrelevance are just a few of the words that keep coming up in the search for reasons for the decline. There are a variety of compelling opinions, and I even have a few of my own.

But I suggest there is another area of decline more significant and perhaps much less obvious—and one that certainly contributes to the church’s decline in numbers. And I think it’s likely a careful analysis would implicate the church’s leadership for this more significant issue.

In other words, I’m concerned about pastors and the role they play in the church’s decline.

By saying so, I’m not suggesting this pastor has it all together. Nor am I trying to cultivate (or ratify) some dishonest skeptics’ hate for the church. Rather, I’m hoping to raise some concerns in a conversational kind of way.

Further, I’m not claiming to be the expert in all church issues. However, I have been in some form of pastoral ministry for the last 19 years and feel I have some measure of insight about the issue.

10 Kinds of Pastors I’m Concerned About

1. I’m concerned about pastors who are better at managing church programs than they are at making disciples of Jesus.

Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger addressed this topic somewhat in the book Simple Church, but I’m not sure how many pastors paid attention to the message.

The church is not better because it has more programs. It’s quite possible for programs to hinder its real mission.

2. I’m concerned about pastors who attract people with fancy self-help sermons instead of teaching people to be students of the Bible and theology.

Sure, topical sermons can be helpful teaching tools when used appropriately and in moderation.

But to pique interest in the unchurched, church-growth pastors have promoted episodic sermons ad nauseam and to no avail at effectively grounding deeply committed disciples of Jesus, as the statistics provided previously demonstrate.

What Every Worship Team Needs – EVERY Week

worship team needs
Lighstock #641627

Every worship team needs one thing every week. Sunday is more than songs—it’s planning, administration, prayer, practice and ministry. There are so many details to consider every week, but there is something else to consider, and it’s more important than all the others. We’ll get to that in just a bit.

I read an article recently called “Why the church doesn’t need anymore coffee bars.” It’s a gut wrenching story, and much of it I agree with. We don’t just need great music, broadway lighting, impressive talent and fresh brewed coffee. Sure. Every worship team needs Jesus more than anything. My heart goes out to the family who lost their precious father. I can’t even imagine the pain.

Therefore, I want to tread lightly on this topic. In no way do I want to disrespect this amazing family and the tragedy they are experiencing—I cannot imagine their pain. However, I do know this—music, lights, coffee and graphics aren’t the problem. The reason we make these aesthetic choices is to serve people.

What Every Worship Team Needs – EVERY Week

It’s similar to saying at a restaurant that background music, tables, chairs, air conditioning and decor doesn’t matter. Only the food matters. Sure, we go to a restaurant to eat, but the vibe aids in our enjoyment of the prime rib. Without the careful, compassionate thought that is given to the aesthetics, we might not return. Sitting on a concrete slab in complete silence with the best fish & chips in the world is fine, but not necessary.

First-time Church Visitor Gift Ideas

Recently, I connected with church leaders from 33 churches from across North America and asked them to share with me what they are doing for first-time church visitor gift ideas. This continues in a series where I’ve asked other church leaders to help us learn what is happening at their church … earlier I’ve done posts on church bulletins, adding new services and the “other holy days.”

I’m thankful for the leaders who took time out to help us all learn!

First-time Church Visitor Gift Ideas – 6 Reasons WHY!

1. Shows guests that you expected them.

Think about the last time you were invited over to a friend’s house … did they get their place ready for you to arrive? Good friends do! We set out a few snacks, have the drinks cooled, light some candles … all signs to our guests that we expected them.

You are inviting guests to come to your church, and a great way to indicate to them that you expected them is to have a gift ready just for them. As a thank you for taking the risk to come and visit you!

2. First impressions count.

When people are new at your church, they notice everything: the grass growing up in the parking lot, the unclear signage, that funky smell in your kids space . . .

Well-thought-out first-time church visitor gift ideas create a great initial experience for your guests. It creates a “moment” that has potential to say a lot about your church. Think through what first impression you want to give to your guests and build your gift around that.

3. Extend the experience beyond the weekend.

Why do people buy t-shirts at a concert when they could probably get the same t-shirt for much less online? Why does every major ride at your favorite theme park exit out through the gift shop?

People are looking for souvenirs from experiences that matter to them. It’s a way for them to take a piece of the experience with them back into their “normal life.” When you give people a gift to take home, it has the potential to help them recall the positive time they had at your church and implicitly invites them to return.

Handling Questions in Youth Ministry: Advice About Advising Teens

handling questions in youth ministry

Handling questions in youth ministry can be tricky. But teens’ inquiries offer access to their thoughts—and serve as opportunities to share the gospel. Teens ask tough questions because they’re changing quickly, and so is their world. Kids wonder about faith, doubt, relationships, sexuality, morals, life choices, and more.

Youth group members view you as a trusted guide. So your approach to handling questions in youth ministry matters. You won’t always have the answers, of course. But you can address sensitive or controversial topics with wisdom and compassion.

Advice for Handling Questions in Youth Ministry

First create an environment where teens feel comfortable opening up. Establish your youth group as a judgment-free zone. Let kids know it’s okay to have doubts. Then respect, don’t condemn, their questions.

When teens share sensitive issues, you may face confidentiality decisions. Explain that you won’t violate their privacy, unless safety is an issue. At times, you may need to involve parents or guardians. So be transparent about that.

Next don’t jump straight to answers when handling questions in youth ministry. Active listening is often more impactful than immediate solutions. Teens need to feel heard before they can engage with your response.

Ask follow-up questions for clarity. If a teen asks, “Why does God let bad things happen?” they may be wrestling with loss or trauma. Knowing the context lets you respond more effectively.

Answer With Discernment and Wisdom

Not every question has a simple answer. And it’s okay to admit that! When you don’t know, say so. Then commit to finding out together. This models humility and the ongoing nature of the Christian walk.

For faith-based questions and ethical dilemmas, guide teens to biblical truth. Share your experiences of wrestling with doubt and how God has worked in your life. Encourage kids to seek God through prayer, Scripture, and trusted mentors.

Emphasize God’s love and grace while upholding his standards. Avoid being overly prescriptive. Instead, invite teens to explore the Bible and its everyday applications.

Handle Sensitive Topics

Questions about sexuality, identity, and relationships can be delicate. So approach these topics with biblical truth and grace.

  • Seek help when needed. Some situations may be beyond your expertise. Issues involving mental health, abuse, or trauma may require the involvement of counselors. Build a network of Christian professionals and resources. Then refer teens and families, when needed.
  • Involve parents wisely. While maintaining teen trust is critical, parents are vital partners. If a situation requires their involvement, approach it with care. Respect the teen’s perspective and ensure they feel supported, not betrayed.
  • Set clear boundaries. Explain what’s appropriate to discuss in one-on-one settings versus group contexts. Always adhere to church policies and safeguards, such as meeting in visible, open spaces.

Equip Teens for Life Choices

Many teens grapple with questions about their future plans. So help them seek God’s guidance and grow in discernment.

  • Teach kids to pray. Explain that prayer is central to decision-making. Share Scriptures like James 1:5. (“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”)
  • Encourage wise counsel. Remind teens to seek advice from seasoned Christians, such as parents, pastors, or mentors. Help them identify people who can provide godly guidance.
  • Point to God’s Word. Teach teens to find answers in Scripture. Highlight passages that address wisdom, trust, and obedience. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Creative Prayers for Children: 5 Ways To Connect With God

creative prayers

Are you trying to include more creative prayers in your children’s ministry? Then look no further! Here are five unique ideas to get started.

Use these creative prayers to help kids connect with Jesus. Let children know they can talk to God anytime and about anything.

5 Creative Prayers for Kids

1. Prayer Walk

First, walk around your church grounds or neighborhood with students. Stop every 50 steps or so. Then invite the children to look around for:

  • something to praise God for creating,
  • someone who has a need, and
  • something that reminds them of a blessing God has given them.

Allow 30 seconds for children to look around. Then take 30 seconds to pray silently before resuming your walk. When you return to the meeting area, discuss the most surprising thing each child found to pray about as they walked.

2. Bearing Burdens

Give each child a sheet of paper and a pencil. Have them write in the center of their paper a prayer concern they’d like to tell others. Then gather the children in a circle (or several circles, if you have a large group). Have children hold their sheets of paper. Have the first child share the concern they wrote, then pass the paper to the person to the left. That person will say a short intercession for the child and rip off a piece of the paper.

Continue around the circle until each child has asked God for help with that need and torn off a piece of the paper. Then have the second child share their need, and so on until all the children are prayed for.

Afterward ask, “What happened to the papers?” Explain that just as our papers became smaller, so our burdens seem smaller when others pray for us.

3. FaithWorks

Write the word “faith” on a large piece of butcher paper. Have each child write on a strip of masking tape a prayer that God has answered. The prayer can be their own, someone else’s, or a situation from the Bible. Use the children’s tape strips to attach the butcher paper to the wall.

Discuss with children that it’s important to share answered prayers. Why? Because they encourage people’s faith! Seeing how God has answered in the past gives us faith for the future.

For kids who have prayer requests, have them write those on the faith poster as an expression of their belief that God will hear and answer. Each week highlight prayer requests that God has answered.

Pastors’ Guide: Trauma-Informed Crisis Stabilization

Crisis Stabilization
Source: Lighstock #805939

Pain and suffering are unavoidable in this world, as Jesus noted: “In the world you will have trouble.” (John 16:33). However, trauma can be avoided and even when it is not, it can be healed.

When our nervous system is overwhelmed by pain and suffering and we lack the necessary internal or external resources to regulate it, the experience becomes traumatic. Pastors are often called upon in times of crisis to provide stabilization and debriefing. This guide aims to equip pastors with trauma-informed strategies to assist individuals effectively, even within a limited timeframe.

Key Objectives

  1. Regulate the Nervous System
  2. Organize the Experience

Regulate the Nervous System

Interventions aimed at returning the person’s nervous system to a ventral vagal state involve:

  • Establishing a sense of safety
  • Troubleshooting basic needs
  • Establishing a self-care plan

Establishing a Sense of Safety

To help someone shift out of fight or flight mode, it is crucial to establish a sense of safety. This involves ensuring the physical environment is safe and communicating this to the individual.

Steps to Establish Safety:

  1. Check the Environment:
    • Ask the individual to look around and confirm they are physically safe.
    • Encourage them to take deep breaths and verbally affirm their safety: “I’m okay, I’m in a safe space, nothing is going to hurt me here.”
  2. Use Calming Communication:
    • Speak in a soft, low-pitched, slow rate of speech to communicate safety.
    • Utilize warm facial expressions and gentle body language.
  3. Grounding Techniques:
    • Guide the individuals to feel the seat supporting them and their feet on the ground.
    • Encourage deep, slow breathing, which stimulates the ventral vagus nerve.

Troubleshooting Basic Needs

Once the person is somewhat regulated, confirm their basic needs:

  • Safe place to sleep
  • Access to food, water, and clothing
  • Human support

Steps To Address Basic Needs:

  • Ask about their plans after the meeting: “Where will you go? Do you have a safe place to sleep tonight?”
  • If any needs are unmet, help them create a plan to address these needs and involve an additional safe person for support.

Establishing a Self-Care Plan

Educate the individual on basic self-care to help maintain regulation:

  • Eat three nutritious meals daily.
  • Prioritize 7-10 hours of sleep.
  • Engage in light exercise like stretching and walking.
  • Take time for fun, relaxing activities.
  • Journal daily to process emotions.
  • Stay connected with safe friends and family.

Encourage them to write these steps down and review them daily.

Organize the Experience

Once basic needs and self-care are addressed, help the individual make sense of their experience.

Steps To Organize the Experience:

  1. Share the Story:
    • Invite the individuals to tell their stories: “Can you share with me what happened?”
  2. Acknowledge Emotions:
    • Reflect their emotions and validate their feelings: “That makes a lot of sense. It sounds like a normal way of feeling under the circumstances.”
  3. Notice and Name Experience:
    • Collaboratively observe and articulate their experiences, helping them to organize their thoughts and emotions.
  4. Co-Create Narrative:
    • Through back-and-forth dialogue, help them develop a coherent narrative of what happened and its impact.
  5. Identify Losses and Process Grief:
    • Identify both tangible and intangible losses.
    • Guide them through grief by noticing and naming losses, feeling through associated emotions, and integrating the wisdom gained from the experience.
  6. Plan Action:
    • Help them develop a plan for moving forward, making informed decisions, and considering relational changes if necessary.

Conclusion

Pastors can play a crucial role in preventing trauma from becoming entrenched by helping individuals regulate their nervous systems and organize their experiences. By establishing safety, addressing basic needs, and guiding through self-care and narrative construction, pastors can support healing and transformation, allowing individuals to grow and thrive in the face of adversity.

Integration of Faith and Neuroscience

The approach outlined in this guide integrates biblical principles with insights from neuroscience, recognizing that the author of the human nervous system and the Bible is one and the same—Jesus. This holistic approach aligns with the concept of sanctification, where transforming one’s mind and living by the Spirit (Romans 12:2; Galatians 5:16) leads to profound healing and growth. Through these trauma-informed practices, pastors can help individuals navigate their pain and suffering with the assurance that they are not alone and that healing is possible.

‘You Need to Repent’—Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates Responds to White Evangelical Pastors Celebrating Trump’s Presidency as a Sign of God’s Favor

Pastors celebrating Donald Trump’s presidency as a sign of God’s favor to the United States need to repent of their “theological arrogance” and their “failure to understand Scripture in light of history,” said Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 23.

“I want to offer to you tonight a response to some of the messages from, namely, white evangelical—some of them associates of mine—pastors in Texas, Georgia, and in other places,” said Dates, “who want you to think, theologically, that God somehow intervened and delivered for America salvation in the inauguration of the 47th president.”

“That’s not Christianity,” he said.

Charlie Dates: ‘God Is Not on the Side of Those in Power’

Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates is senior pastor of Progressive Baptist Church and Salem Baptist Church in Chicago. In the caption of his video, he said, “I offer this pastoral rebuttal to those who are sincerely seeking the Christ of The Scriptures and for those who are defending the faith against its misrepresentations.”

“You should vote according to your convictions,” Dates said, “but to claim the results of this election and the day of this inauguration as the favor of God on America is the sorrowful historical succession of inaccurate and irresponsible theology.”

“To be clear,” Dates added in the caption, “I do not think that either party fully represents the interests of Jesus Christ. They both fail miserably. My issue isn’t with the parties, but with the leaders of the Church who tie Christ to their candidate.”

In his video, Dates quoted orator, author and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who differentiated between a Christianity “of this land” and a Christianity “of Christ” and said, “Between the two, we recognize so wide a difference that to be the friend of one is to be the enemy of the other.”

“Some of these pastors would have you to believe that God somehow now is riding on the backs of their issues and their candidate,” said Dates. “But the problem with that is that we get to cast God in the light of our political and cultural interest. We all want to do that.”

“I have to ask you, brother pastor, where was God when my ancestors were praying to him through the 240 years of American chattel slavery?” Dates asked. “Where was God at the failed point of reconstruction? Where was God when my ancestors and my grandparents were marching to end a long night—73 years-plus of Jim Crow? Was he not present, or is he present now because the issues that you pick have come to prevail?”

Daniel Ritchie on the Sanctity of Life: ‘There Are No Accidental Image-Bearers’

Last Sunday (Jan. 19), as churches throughout America honored the sanctity of human life, Daniel Ritchie shared his powerful story at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. Ritchie, born without arms 40 years ago, urged listeners to stand in the gap for life, just as his father did for him.

In the delivery room in 1984, Ritchie arrived armless, to everyone’s surprise, and also struggled to breathe. But when the doctor asked Ritchie’s dad if he should just “let him go,” the new father chose life, urging all necessary actions to bring back his son.

“There’s no way in the world my dad could have imagined what God has brought about” through that one decision, said Ritchie. The married father of two, who has an in-demand speaking ministry, said, “Because of that one sentence, I get the opportunity every year to literally share the gospel with millions of people.”

Prestonwood, led by Senior Pastor Jack Graham, has had a pregnancy center since 1991. During Sunday’s services, people involved with the center shared how it has changed their life. Ritchie, who will speak at Prestonwood’s men’s conference on Jan. 24, has “no arms but his feet are beautiful carriers of the gospel,” according to a post from Graham.

Daniel Ritchie: ‘God Is the Author of Life’

Preaching on John 1:1-5, Daniel Ritchie emphasized that “God is the author of life” and that true life is found in Jesus, the Word. “Jesus is our light, our life, our everything,” he said. “Our very personhood hangs on the person and work of Jesus Christ. We look to him to know and understand what our value, what our worth, and what our calling is.”

Ritchie continued, “We’re not a collection of cells. We’re not some accidental, spontaneous creation.” Because God made each person “fearfully and wonderfully,” he said, “there are no accidental image-bearers in this room.”

While growing up, Ritchie doubted God’s plans, wondering, “What in the world is God going to do in an armless life like mine?” Decades later, he sees how “God is using these empty sleeves [and] the weak things of the world to shame the wise…We don’t have to come in the same package as everybody else for us to be used in the kingdom of God.”

During his sermon, Ritchie spoke about the value of pregnant women, as well. Mothers who consider abortion aren’t the enemy or monsters, he told worshipers, and the church must stop treating them as such. “They’re scared, and they have nowhere else to turn,” he said of pregnant women. Thinking the church will judge them, they “turn to Planned Parenthood because that’s the one place that welcomes them with open arms.”

Bernice King Says Pastor Quoted Her Father ‘Out of Context’ During Trump Inauguration Prayer

Dr. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has said that Pastor Lorenzo Sewell distorted the message of her father’s “most well-known speech” when Sewell quoted it while praying at the inauguration of President Donald Trump on Monday, Jan. 20. That day was also Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“I don’t deny the power of my father’s most well-known speech, ‘I Have a Dream,’” said Bernice King, who is a minister, thought leader, and CEO of the King Center, on X Wednesday, Jan. 22. “However, its power and popularity (with focus on its conclusion) have been misused to weaken its clear messaging about ending racism, stopping police brutality, ensuring voting rights, and eradicating economic injustice.”

Lorenzo Sewell Prays ‘Americans Would Begin To Dream Again’

Lorenzo Sewell is the senior pastor of 180 Church in Detroit. He campaigned for Trump in 2024, appearing at the Republican National Convention and hosting Trump at his church. The pastor came under criticism for asking social media users later in the day Monday to purchase his cryptocurrency.

He also joined a chorus of church leaders criticizing Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde for taking the final minutes of her message Tuesday, Jan. 21, to ask Trump to have “mercy upon the people in our country,” specifically immigrants and “gay, lesbian, and transgender children.”

“We are grateful that you are the one that have [sic] called [Trump] for such a time as this, that Americans would begin to dream again,” Lorenzo prayed during Trump’s inauguration, after giving God thanks for Trump’s “millimeter miracle.”

“We pray that we would fulfill the true meaning of our creed, that we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” the pastor continued, quoting the Declaration of Independence. “We pray that you use our president, that we will live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character.”

Sewell’s prayer Monday went on to directly quote and/or paraphrase a large section of the end of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, beginning with King’s quote of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”: “My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. / Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, / From every mountainside, let freedom ring!”

“Because America is called to be a great nation, we believe that you will make this come true,” said Sewell, rephrasing King’s words, which were, “And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.”
