Victory Boyd, a Grammy Award-winning Gospel artist, has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against mainstream rapper Travis Scott. Boyd claims that Scott copied some original lyrics and melodies from her 2019 song “Like the Way It Sounds” for use in his 2023 song “Telekinesis.”

Other defendants include Scott’s “Telekinesis” collaborators, SZA and Future, as well as a watch company that used the song in an ad campaign against Boyd’s wishes.

In the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court on Jan. 8, Boyd asks that Scott, SZA, and Future “recall and destroy” any music that infringes on her work. She is also seeking damages in an amount to be determined at trial.

“It’s not about the money,” Boyd wrote on social media. “It’s about reclaiming GODs [sic] property.”

Boyd, one of nine siblings, has been performing since age 4. The 30-year-old singer, whose voice has been compared to Nina Simone’s, moved to Wyoming “on a whim” in 2019 to write songs for Kanye West, known as Ye.

According to a lengthy Instagram video, Boyd got tired of seeing her hard work get “scrapped and truncated.” So she “decided that I am no longer writing songs for Ye, but rather I am writing songs for Jesus.” After switching her focus, Boyd said, she knew her work would never be in vain, even if no one but God heard the results.

On Instagram, Boyd shares a clip of her singing a tune she wrote about a heavenly dance party. Before she released it through her label, Roc Nation, Boyd said she heard “stolen” portions of it in “Telekinesis.” She claims Scott had access to her work through his friendship with West during that singer’s “Jesus Is King” era.

Next, Boyd played snippets of Scott’s “Telekinesis,” which contains some explicit lyrics. “I never would have consented to being associated and to help make a hit song that spread this message,” said the Gospel singer.

“Not once did anyone ask me or consider to inquire about my participation in this song,” Boyd added. “The answer would have been no. I wrote this song for God, and to the extent that Ye was working for God, I was working for Ye.”

SBC Executive Committee Taps Jeff Dalrymple To Spearhead Long-Term Abuse Reforms

The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention has named Jeff Dalrymple as the head of the office that will be dedicated to the long-term implementation of denominational reforms to address sexual abuse prevention and reporting.

Dalrymple’s appointment comes roughly eight months after the temporary task force assigned with implementing reforms was dissolved having fallen short of its purpose to create the “Ministry Check” website, which would serve as an online database of SBC pastors, church leaders, and volunteers who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse.

While the task force did succeed in creating a resource toolkit for churches seeking training in abuse prevention and reporting, task force chairman Josh Wester reported at the denomination’s annual meeting in June 2024 that the team had been plagued by liability concerns that had kept it from implementing the Ministry Check site.

Wester nevertheless expressed optimism that the Executive Committee would complete the task under the leadership of its new president, Dr. Jeff Iorg.

“If we hadn’t had the cooperation and leadership that we’ve seen from Dr. Iorg, we probably would have just tried to extend the task force another year,” Webster said, “rather than turning it over to a body that not only has been in turmoil, but was really at the center of where this started.”

“If we get here next year and there are no names on the database, which seems unfathomable to me,” Wester said, “I’m confident that messengers are going to rise up and demand to know why and potentially take whatever actions are necessary, because [the database] is completely achievable.”

Iorg has now announced that Jeff Dalrymple will spearhead the effort to complete the task.

Dalrymple comes to the position after serving as executive director of the Evangelical Council for Abuse Prevention (ECAP), which works to set national standards to protect vulnerable groups.

Dalrymple has also served as a vice president at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and was previously in a leadership position at the Kentucky Baptist Convention.

“During our multiple interviews, I was consistently impressed with Jeff’s breadth of technical knowledge as well as his calm and reasoned demeanor about these sensitive issues,” Iorg said in a statement to Baptist Press. “He has the informational background and strength of character needed to take on this strategic new position.”

Why Did Google Kill Easy Church Tech?

Easy Church Tech

You’re reading this page here at ChurchLeaders.com because Google decided it did not like websites like mine, Easy Church Tech, that provided helpful content to people who were looking for answers about church technology. So they shut down access to it. (This was not just about church technology but they have decimated sites similar to it. Check out these articles by HouseFresh , The Verge, and RetroDodo.)

Why Did Google Kill Easy Church Tech?

I have had to pivot. Church Technology is a very small niche. So when faced with my traffic being decimated, I realized that I really had no choice but to shut down the website. Social media would not make up the traffic that was needed to pay for the site.

If you are tired of the Google monopoly I suggest you divest yourself from all Google Products. Here are some options.

  • Use Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo as your search engine.
  • Use Firefox as your web browser. Brave, Edge, and other browsers are still using Chromium as the base technology and still sends data to Google.
  • Stop using Gmail and switch to Protonmail.
  • Stop using the Google publishing suite. Google Docs, Google Sheets, Etc.

Finally, if you would consider sharing this website with your church leaders, I provide inexpensive Bible studies for Sunday school, Mid-Week Bible studies, and home groups.

3 Reasons to Stop Doing One-On-One Discipleship

one-on-one discipleship
Adobe Stock #136756622

I’ve quit doing one-on-one discipleship and so should you. Let me tell you why.

First, let me explain that I used to love doing one-on-one discipleship and I did it for years. I’ve taught on how to do it across the United States and in other countries. I even co-authored a great one-on-one discipleship book that has sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into a few other languages. (I’m not slamming this as an outsider!)

But then something unexpected happened. I invited a friend of mine named Mark into a one-on-one discipleship relationship. We met for coffee at Barnes and Noble’s and began working through the book Beginning the Journey which Ralph Neighbour and I wrote. It was going great and we were both enjoying it and he said, “Could I invite my friend Brian to join us? He could really use this.” I said, “Sure.” So the next week Brian joined us. Brian loved it and asked if he could invite someone else.

Before I knew it, my one-on-one relationship with Mark had morphed into a mini-group of four and I was startled by how much better everything went. Interaction improved, encouragement multiplied, and learning went to a new level. The group which had been great, got even better. I’m a slow learner and it took me a while to figure it out, but about ten years ago I ditched one-on-one discipleship to do small discipleship groups and have never looked back. Here are three reasons why you should do the same:

3 Reasons to Stop Doing One-On-One Discipleship

1. One-on-one discipleship is unbiblical.

For some reason when most of us hear “discipleship” we picture a one-on-one relationship. I’m not sure why because it is not the dominate Biblical model. You don’t see Jesus investing significant one-on-one time in a follower. His core group was three people—Peter, James, and John. “But what about Paul and Timothy?”, you might ask. Actually, it wasn’t just Paul and Timothy. Paul had Silas at his side when he recruited Timothy and then others like Titus and Luke joined the entourage. Even in the famous “one-on-one” verse—2 Timothy 2:2—look closely at what Paul says, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (NIV, italics added) Paul clearly implies that he related to Timothy in a group setting and he calls him to do the same with others.

Dear Birth Mother: A Thank You Letter to a Beautiful, Brave Woman

dear birth mother

Read this touching dear birth mother letter. The recipient—and others like her—gave the precious gift of life.

Dear Birth Mother: Thank You

Dear Birth Mother,

In a world of 8+ billion people, it seems impossible that my words will ever find you. Still, they’ve been on my heart for years now. Today I feel compelled to send them out wherever they may go. Maybe they will find someone else who needs to hear them.

Or maybe the same sovereign hand that brought a precious baby to me will bring these words back to the one who bore her. So I send them out and trust that God will do with them whatever He sees fit.

You have sent out and trusted in far more unimaginable and enormous ways than I can ever comprehend. This is why I write this letter, dear birth mother.

She is playing on the floor beside me. The one who has your eyes, your smile, your laugh. I don’t know your name, and you don’t know mine. But those small pieces of you I do know—I know them so very well. I have memorized them like a piece of my own heart now.

You must be so beautiful, because she is.

My husband sometimes says there’s an empty seat at our table, meaning maybe another child is still out there for our family. He does this to be funny, in truth. But I admit to sometimes noticing that empty chair. Except it’s not a child who is missing, in my mind. No matter how much she smiles, your empty chair in her world will always be there.

Loss is like a haunting. It involves the cutting of a vital cord, with ends left loose, never to be retied again this side of eternity. That cord searches for its other end nevertheless, with a gaping openness where there should be closure.

Sometimes it looks like seeing a face in a crowd that isn’t there. I remember searching for my own mother’s face when she left this earth too early, and I have to wonder. Are you on the other side of the world today haunted by the absence of a little girl? Do you see an empty chair too and wonder? Or look for her face in the crowd?

She looks for you. She gets lost sometimes, in her mind, whenever a brightly colored sari catches her eye, or she sees an Indian baby with her Indian mommy. Her gaze will linger, haunted by a woman she never knew.

Angela Halili and Arielle Reitsma of “Girls Gone Bible” have gone viral and are taking heat from some for a prayer they gave at a rally one day before President Donald Trump’s inauguration, which took place Monday, Jan. 20. During the first part of her prayer, Halili modified the Lord’s Prayer to apply to Trump.

“God, thank you. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you Jesus for today, seriously,” Halili began. “God, we thank you. We thank you that your will always prevails.”

“Thank you God that it’s your will,” she said, “your kingdom come, Lord, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, in America as it is in heaven, in the life of President Donald Trump as it is in heaven.”

Some took issue with this adaptation, including former Trump campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis.

“Girls Gone Bible” is a podcast cohosted by Angela Halili and Arielle Reitsma. It covers various topics pertaining to Christian life, including not having sex before marriage, mental health, spiritual warfare, and body dysmorphia.

The first episode was released May 2023, and the podcast is the No. 1 ranked Religion and Spirituality podcast on Spotify, according to the Girls Gone Bible website. The duo is currently on tour.

Halili and Reitsma have previously interacted with Trump; on Oct. 26, each influencer posted an Instagram reel of themselves praying over him.

Reitsma spoke after Halili at the Jan. 19 rally, saying, “We just want to take a moment and honor President Donald Trump. We thank you for your relentless love and devotion you have given to this country and we bless you and we bless your beautiful family.”

Newsboys Guitarist Adam Agee Steps Up to the Microphone Following Michael Tait’s Departure

On Saturday, Jan. 18, Newsboys played their first show without Michael Tait, who had been the band’s lead singer for 15 years.

Tait, who rose to fame in the 90s alongside TobyMac and Kevin Max in the band DC Talk, surprised Christian music fans last week (Jan. 16) when he announced he was leaving Newsboys.

“While this may come as a surprise given I’ve been touring ever since college, l’ve made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys,” Tait said. “This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision.”

Tait’s announcement came just two days before the band was scheduled to kick off the first night of the Worldwide Revival Nights Tour.

RELATED: Michael Tait Announces He Is Leaving Newsboys, a Decision That Didn’t ‘Come Lightly’

In a statement that followed Tait’s, Newsboys said, “We are grateful for the extended season Michael has had with Newsboys. As he said in his announcement, the memories we share are deeply cherished. As he walks into the next season of his life, we are stepping into the next season of Newsboys.”

During Saturday night’s show, Newsboys’ guitarist Adam Agee, who joined the band in 2023, told the crowd, “We’ve been through a lot this week.”

Agee first became known in the Christian music world after his pop-punk band Stellar Kart released, “All Gas. No Brake.,” in 2005. The band was nominated for nine GMA Dove Awards and in 2007 won Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for “Me and Jesus.”

Stellar Kart released six albums before disbanding in 2014. That same year, Agee went on to fill the lead singer role in the band Audio Adrenaline, a role that was left vacant after the departure of Kevin Max.

On Saturday night, Agee said that the band found out about Tait’s departure only a week ago. “When the news hit us a week ago,” he said, “it brings up a lot of questions like: What do we do? Do we move forward?”

Former North Carolina Pastor Allegedly Stole Congregants’ Hurricane Relief Donations

Jeffrey Brian Merrow, former pastor of Garden Creek Baptist Church in Marion, North Carolina, has been arrested and charged with felony embezzlement and felony larceny. According to the local sheriff’s office, congregants raised concerns about hurricane relief donations of cash and supplies that never made it to disaster victims.

Merrow, 60, is being held on $5,000 bond. He was already on supervised probation in a separate case.

North Carolina Pastor’s Congregants Contacted Police About Hurricane Donations

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that Garden Creek members met with a deputy on Oct. 28, 2024, about concerns, pointing to Merrow as a possible suspect. Congregants told the deputy that “large amounts of cash donations” intended for victims of Hurricane Helene were never submitted “for their intended use.” In addition, they said community donations such as generators, heaters, and chain saws were reported as stolen.

At the meeting, congregants also gave the deputy “numerous receipts…for goods that were never purchased or services that were never rendered, all paid for using church funds.” Included was an insurance claim regarding “items that were never stolen,” according to the sheriff’s statement.

The sheriff’s office issued a warrant for Merrow’s arrest on Nov. 19. They took him into custody on Jan. 5 and are continuing to investigate.

According to the sheriff’s statement, Merrow “is currently on supervised probation for Obtaining Property by False Pretense greater than $100,000, from an unrelated incident.”

Former North Carolina Pastor Preached About Temptation

Hurricane Helene, which struck the Southeast U.S. in late September, killed more than 200 people and caused catastrophic flooding in western Appalachia. Numerous faith-based relief agencies continue to assist with recovery efforts.

In a Sept. 1 sermon posted to YouTube, Pastor Merrow talked about temptation, saying the “devil likes to get you where you’re the weakest.” The way to prevent that, he added, is by “getting on your knees” and reading the Bible.

John MacArthur Still ‘Bedridden’ at Hospital Following Complications From Heart Valve Replacement

On Saturday, Jan. 18, Phil Johnson, executive director of Grace to You and an elder at Grace Community Church (GCC) in Sun Valley, California, provided a health update on the 85-year-old Pastor John MacArthur.

“For those who missed my reply to someone who asked,” Johnson posted on social media, “John MacArthur is still in the hospital, so keep him in your prayers. He’s been bedridden long enough they are giving him physical therapy.”

Earlier this month, Johnson shared that MacArthur is receiving treatment for complications stemming from a heart valve replacement he received last year.

Phil Johnson Provides Own Health Update Regarding Blood Cancer

Johnson also gave an update on his own health. Last June, the GCC elder shared that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. However, although there isn’t a cure for the cancer, it is controllable with treatment.

“My cancer treatment so far has been somewhat eventful (a couple of trips to the USC Medical Center for extra stitches on a surgical incision), but it has not been as bad as I feared,” Johnson said.

“The drugs they have me injecting myself with make me feel feeble, with lots of bone pain,” he added. “And the blood thinners I’m on have caused havoc with the port they put in my jugular.” Johnson said that his wife, Darlene, “gets upset when [he is] bleeding from the neck.”

Johnson shared that what he is going through “could be worse,” and it probably will become worse after he begins chemotherapy treatment on Jan. 27.

“I thought about posting a picture I took while they were trying to fix the dialysis catheter protruding from my jugular,” he said. “But my neck was so bruised and bleeding that the pic was a little too graphic, even for me.”

Johnson has work alongside MacArthur for over 40 years, editing the majority of MacArthur’s books.

‘It’s Not Just a Role; It’s Been Teaching Me’—’The Chosen’ Star Speaks of the Emotions of Season 5

Elizabeth Tabish

Actor and director Elizabeth Tabish portrays Mary Magdalene in “The Chosen.” After wrapping up filming the fifth of seven seasons, Tabish mentioned how emotional Season 5 is as “everything’s just ramped up.”

“It’s been an empowering thing because usually a woman that has gone through that sort of trauma doesn’t always have a happy ending,” Tabish said.

Editor’s note: This article contains spoilers for “The Chosen.”

Elizabeth Tabish Portrays Mary Magdalene, ‘Totally Focused on Jesus’ in ‘The Chosen’

In a recent interview with YouTuber Ruslan, Tabish opened up about her role as Mary Magdalene and the emotional Season 5 of “The Chosen.”

Mary Magdalene has been a character in “The Chosen” from the show’s very beginning. In the first episode of the series, Mary is possessed by evil spirits and identifies as “Lilith.” Her friends have tried many things to help her—without a solution. At the end of the series’ first episode, Jesus meets Mary, calls her by real name, and heals her from possession.

Throughout the next few seasons of Jesus’ life and ministry, Mary plays a consistent role as one of Jesus’ followers and friends.

From the first episode in Season 5, Mary Magdalene “really hears what Jesus is saying” and begins to put puzzle pieces together, Tabish said. Mary realizes that Jesus is literally going to die.

Mary “starts a grieving process in this season,” said Tabish. “I think the way it’s written is sort of preparing her to stay at the cross.” Tabish shared that her best guess is that Mary’s processing will prepare her to “be there to the very end.”

As Mary contemplates ways to help Jesus, the emotions of desperation are almost palpable. “There’s a tone of grief and sorrow this season,” she said.

Season 5 contains the events of the week leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. “I just don’t think she can understand why yet,” Tabish said.

Tabish could not give away any spoilers, but she did, vaguely, share about an impactful scene in the upcoming season.

“There is a really special, wonderful scene with the women that we get a chance to [see] Jesus share his heart and then them get to share their hearts with him,” said Tabish. “That’s just one of those rare things…the women are rarely all together with Jesus.”

Franklin Graham Compares Trump to Moses, Vance to Aaron in Inauguration Prayer

Franklin Graham credited God for bringing President Donald Trump through the darkness of the past four years prior to giving the invocation at Trump’s inauguration ceremony Monday, Jan. 20. During his prayer, Graham compared Trump to Moses and Vice President J.D. Vance to Aaron and prayed for God’s guidance and protection over America’s 47th president.

“Mr. President, the last four years, there are times I’m sure you thought it was pretty dark, but look what God has done,” said Graham after he took the stage in the U.S. Capitol with Trump and former President Biden standing behind him. “We praise him and give him glory.”

Franklin Graham: ‘We Pray for President Trump’

Franklin Graham is president of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham. Franklin Graham, who delivered a prayer at Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, has remained a faithful supporter of Trump’s over the years, said it was an “honor” to be asked to pray at Trump’s second inauguration.

RELATED: ‘He’s Wrong’—Trump Reveals Franklin Graham Told Him His Speeches Would Be Better If He Didn’t Cuss

During Graham’s prayer, Vice President J.D. Vance had his head bowed while Trump appeared to keep his eyes open most of the time.

Graham opened his prayer by quoting Psalm 33:12, which says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,” followed by Daniel 2:20-21. The Daniel passage says, “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”

“Our Father, today, as President Donald J. Trump takes the oath of office once again, we come to say, ‘Thank you, Oh Lord our God,’” Graham said. “Father, when Donald Trump’s enemies thought he was down and out, you and you alone saved his life and raised him up with strength and power by your mighty hand.”

“We pray for President Trump, that you’ll watch over, protect, guide, direct him, give him your wisdom from your throne on high,” said Graham. “We ask that you would bless him and that our nation would be blessed through him.”

Retired Pastor Found Not Guilty of 1975 Murder of 8-Year-Old Girl

David Zandstra

Retired Pastor David Zandstra has been found not guilty of the 1975 murder of 8-year-old Gretchen Harrington.

It reportedly took jurors roughly an hour to reach the verdict.

Zandstra was arrested in November 2023 and charged with criminal homicide, murder in the first, second, and third degree, kidnapping, and possessing an instrument of crime. His arrest came after he allegedly confessing to investigators in July 2023.

The case of Harrington’s murder had gone cold for nearly five decades until a child sexual abuse survivor identified Zandstra as her abuser. At the time of the abuse, which allegedly also took place in 1975, Zandstra was the pastor of Trinity Church Chapel Christian Reformed Church in Marple, Pennsylvania.

RELATED: Johnny Hunt’s Defamation Trial Against SBC Gets New Date; Hunt Seeking $100M, Claims His Annual Income at NAMB Was $610K

The survivor told investigators that she was friends with Zandstra’s daughter and that Zandstra assaulted her while she was at a sleepover in his home.

Investigators then linked Zandstra to the murder of Harrington, who went missing on Aug. 15, 1975, while walking to a summer Bible camp. The Bible camp utilized the facilities of Trinity Church Chapel, as well as the nearby Reformed Presbyterian Church, where Harrington’s father was pastor. The two churches and Harrington’s home were all on the same road in the small township west of Philadelphia.

In October 1975, skeletal remains were discovered at the nearby Ridley Creek State Park. Police later confirmed that the remains were Harrington’s.

Zandstra presided over Harrington’s funeral.

When investigators came to interview Zandstra in 2023 in Marrietta, Georgia, where he had since moved, Zandstra allegedly told them that he had murdered Harrington after attempting to molest her.

RELATED: Retired Pastor Who Is Accused of 1975 Murder of 8-Year-Old Girl Appears in Court; Defense Says Confession Was Coerced

At trial, Zandstra’s defense team alleged that investigators had manipulated and tricked Zandstra into confessing to a crime he did not commit. Zandstra was 83 years old at the time of the lengthy interview with investigators.

African Christian Leaders See Common Cause With an Incoming President Donald Trump

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS) — President-elect Donald Trump has never visited Africa and is known to have made disparaging remarks about the continent. But as Christian leaders look to his inauguration this Monday (Jan. 20), they see areas of common cause.

Since the November elections, many church leaders have followed Trump’s interactions, public statements and activities. When it comes to defending Christianity, religious freedom and resolving world conflicts, they like what they see.

The Rev. Lambert Mbela, a bishop of the Redeemed Gospel Church, said he plans to watch Trump’s second inauguration and said the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, expected to begin Sunday with the first hostage exchange, is a good sign.

“I believe this (electoral victory) contributed to the peace deal,” he said. “I think he catalyzed it. My greatest expectation is that he is going to do something … that will change many things around the world.”

RELATED: ‘An Honor’—Franklin Graham To Offer Invocation at Trump Inauguration for the Second Time

Nigerian Baptist pastor the Rev. Joseph John Hayab hopes Trump’s administration will support religious freedom and emphasize family values, as well as provide support for counterterrorism efforts against groups such as northern Nigeria’s Boko Haram and al-Shabaab, the Somalia based al-Qaida affiliate in East Africa.

“Many African churches hope that Trump will continue to champion religious freedom and support for Christians, especially in regions where they face persecution … ” said Hayab, a former chairperson of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the northern state of Kaduna.

He said Trump’s advocacy for traditional family values resonates with the view of many conservative communities in Africa.

“There might be hope for continued promotion of these values in U.S. foreign policy,” he said.

Hayab observed that conservative African churches have strong anti-abortion views and may align with Trump’s policies that restrict funding to organizations that provide or promote abortion services.

Backing this view is the Rev. John Gbemboyo Joseph Mbikoyezu, the coordinator of the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference.

“He frequently spoke about abortion during his campaigns and promised to tackle the rampant killings,” said Mbikoyuzu. “Life is to be preserved and cared for, and these are values we stand for.”

In reality, Trump’s 2024 campaign opposed a federal abortion ban and omitted the explicit basis for a national ban in the Republican Party platform.

Still, how the U.S. addresses the issues of abortion and LGBTQ+ rights is of great concern to African clerics. Many of them reject homosexuality as contrary to Scripture and African cultures.

According to Tumi BB Senokoane, a professor of theological ethics at the University of South Africa, Trump is a conservative Christian; his views are conventional, and he has proven to be consistent as far as religion is concerned.

“His fundamental belief is that God should bless America, and this informs his world view. The blessings are based on American decisions and things such as abortion, homosexuality and domination,” he said.

Constitutions in various African countries ban abortion and homosexuality. In 2024, 30 of the 54 countries in Africa had laws banning homosexuality. Some reports indicate that 20 out of the 54 countries in Africa have recently loosened laws on abortion.

(RNS) — Just before President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office on Monday (Jan. 20), country singer Lee Greenwood will join the United States Marine Band for a familiar song—“God Bless the USA,” his 1984 hit that’s become a patriotic anthem and a MAGA theme song.

And most of the world will be watching.

This doesn’t bother Greenwood, who has performed at previous inaugurations.

“There are billions of people watching, but I don’t focus on that,” Greenwood told RNS. “I focus on the moment, and where we are at the Capital, and this moment in history.”

The Trump era has been a boom-time for the 81-year-old Greenwood, with the once and future president featuring “God Bless the USA” during his campaign rallies and endorsing a Bible edition inspired by Greenwood’s hit song—including one specifically printed for the inauguration.

In a video interview from his home in Franklin, Tennessee, Greenwood, who is a member of a Baptist megachurch in the Nashville suburbs, said his hit song is a reminder of the role that Christianity has long played in American life.

“I still think we’re a Christian nation,” he said. “We have to remember our roots. We came here not to escape religion. We came to bring faith with us.”

A self-described Reagan Republican who long performed on USO tours for the military — including a 1987 tour with Bob Hope — Greenwood credits the long success of “God Bless the USA” to its combination of patriotic themes and its connection to human struggles. The song begins by recognizing those struggles, said Greenwood.

“The first line of my song resonates with people who have been in the struggles of life,” he said. “‘If tomorrow all the things were gone, I’d worked for all my life.’ Are you kidding? We’ve all been there. We’ve all been down.”

During the interview, Greenwood mixed his politics in with his faith. A native Californian who was born in Los Angeles, Greenwood said he has great empathy for victims of wildfires there but blames the disaster on what he said were the failures of California public officials. While he’s proud that “God Bless the USA” has long been used at naturalization ceremonies for new American citizens, he’s critical of the country’s current immigration policies.

“I think we should build the wall,” he said. “I think we know that we need to know who’s coming in the country. We have to be a sovereign nation.”

By intentionally incorporating faith into your time together, you can strengthen your bond and deepen your relationship with God. If you’re looking for inspiration, here are some creative Christian date night ideas to help you connect on a deeper level.

A Christian Date Night Can Transform Your Relationship

Date nights are often associated with fun and romance, but Christian date night ideas go a step further by fostering spiritual growth. These intentional activities help couples focus on their shared faith, creating a strong foundation for their relationship. By prioritizing spiritual intimacy, couples can navigate challenges with greater unity, pray together with purpose, and grow in their walk with Christ as a team.

Whether you’re newly dating or have been married for years, these Christian date night ideas can enrich your relationship and bring you closer together.

1. Host a Home Worship Night

Transform your living room into a sacred space for worship and praise. Create a playlist of your favorite worship songs and spend time singing, praying, and reflecting on God’s goodness. You can also take turns sharing a Scripture passage that has been meaningful to you recently.

This type of date night allows you to connect not only with each other but also with God. It’s a beautiful reminder that worship can happen anywhere, even in the comfort of your own home.

2. Volunteer Together for a Cause You Care About

Serving others is a powerful way to grow closer as a couple while living out your faith. Choose a cause that resonates with both of you, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen, helping with a local church outreach program, or participating in a community cleanup.

Working together to serve others fosters teamwork and helps you focus on the bigger picture of what God is doing in your community. Plus, it’s a meaningful way to spend time together while making a difference.

3. Plan a Prayer Walk in Nature

Take your date night outdoors by planning a prayer walk in a scenic area. Whether it’s a local park, hiking trail, or quiet neighborhood, walking together in God’s creation provides a serene backdrop for prayer and conversation.

During your walk, take turns lifting up specific prayers for each other, your relationship, and those around you. This activity not only deepens your spiritual connection but also allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature.

5 Ways Compassion International Is Tackling Global Poverty

Compassion International is an organization that has been at the forefront of addressing global poverty for decades. Founded in 1952, the nonprofit works with local churches across the globe to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. With a mission rooted in long-term solutions and a holistic approach, Compassion International touches the lives of millions of children and their families every year. Here are five key ways Compassion International is tackling global poverty:

5 Ways Compassion International Is Tackling Global Poverty

1. Compassion International’s Holistic Approach to Child Development

At the heart of Compassion International’s mission is the belief that child development is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. The organization doesn’t just focus on meeting the immediate physical needs of children; it aims to address their emotional, social, and spiritual growth as well. By partnering with local churches and community-based organizations, Compassion is able to implement a holistic child development program that is culturally sensitive and effective.

Each child enrolled in the program receives education, healthcare, access to clean water, and nutritious food. They also benefit from mentorship, counseling, and spiritual guidance that help them grow in confidence and understanding of their identity. The holistic model addresses not only the child’s basic needs but also their long-term well-being, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience.

2. Education and Skills Training for a Brighter Future

Education is one of the most effective tools in the fight against poverty. Compassion International places a strong emphasis on providing quality education to children living in poverty-stricken areas. In many developing nations, education is not always accessible, or it may be of poor quality, leaving children vulnerable to exploitation and unemployment later in life.

Compassion’s education initiatives include school sponsorships, providing resources for local schools, and offering specialized tutoring and skills training. Through these efforts, children receive a solid educational foundation that helps them escape the cycle of poverty and prepare for brighter futures. Compassion International also provides vocational training for older children, helping them develop practical skills in areas like agriculture, technology, and business that can provide long-term employment opportunities.

3. Healthcare Services and Disease Prevention

Health is a crucial factor in breaking the cycle of poverty, and Compassion International takes a comprehensive approach to ensuring the well-being of children in the program. Many children in impoverished communities suffer from malnutrition, poor sanitation, and lack of access to basic healthcare services. These conditions prevent them from achieving their full potential and often lead to serious health complications.

Compassion International addresses these challenges by providing essential healthcare services to children and their families. This includes regular health check-ups, vaccinations, medical treatment, and nutrition programs. In regions where diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS are prevalent, Compassion works to provide disease prevention education and ensure that children receive the necessary medications to stay healthy.

Following his widely discussed interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Christian apologist Wesley Huff published a short video “debunking” false statements he made during the conversation.

“It’s been just under a week since my podcast with Joe Rogan dropped, and it’s been quite the week,” Huff said in a video posted to X Tuesday, Jan. 14. “I did want to come on here, though, and say a few things.”

“My time with Rogan was amazing,” said Huff, “but both myself and others have caught things I said that weren’t correct. And so in light of that, I’m going to be making a response video to myself.”

Wesley Huff’s conversation with Joe Rogan, who hosts one of the most popular podcasts in the world, released on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and has nearly 5 million views on YouTube as of this writing.

Joe Rogan is a comedian, UFC color commentator, and the host of “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Wesley Huff is the Central Canada director for Apologetics Canada, according to his website.

He has a B.A. in sociology from York University, a Masters of Theological Studies from Tyndale University, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in New Testament at the University of Toronto’s Wycliffe College.

During their discussion, which ran more than three hours, Rogan asked Huff questions about the possibility of miracles, the evidence for the resurrection, whether it is possible that Jesus did not die, and why Huff believes that Jesus was not merely a moral teacher.

Huff has gone viral for the articulate and balanced way he presented evidence for the Christian faith to Rogan, who is not a Christian and whose audience is massive. In fact, it was how Huff shared his views in a controversial debate with 4BiddenKnowledge Inc. founder and CEO Billy Carson last fall that caused Rogan to become aware of the apologist in the first place.

In his video responding to his interview with Rogan, Huff quickly ticked off several corrections, including that Huff had cited the 10th article of the LDS church when he had actually meant the 8th, had said “pantheon” instead of “Parthenon,” and had referenced 1 Corinthians 15 as saying 400 people saw Jesus after his resurrection when it actually says that 500 did.
